baumer
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom the Crystal Skull played huge to families. Family film isn't what you think it is.

Dont imagine there will be many under 10s seeing Rampage but that's similar to other films like Jurassic World. Not kid friendly but still plays like a family movie. I don't see parents taking their teenage kids to Rampage. Do teenagers even go to the movies with their parents? This movie seems like a movie for adolescents who do their own thing on their own or with their friends. jmo

Rampage's opening weekend demos show the film playing to an audience that was 55% male vs. 45% female with 63% of the audience coming in over the age of 25. Audiences gave the film an "A-" CinemaScore. We hear that last night’s audience was comprised of a younger audience, even though it was a school night. Twelve-to 16-year olds are the film’s biggest and most urgent read on tracking. Previews began at 7PM. Meanwhile families turned up at matinees and continued to show up in the evening for Rampage. It’s a popcorn movie that once people are in theater and have a fun time, they leave and pass the good word on. All of this is backed up by Rampage‘s A- CinemaScore (the same as Dwayne Johnson’s Central Intelligence, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and his previous team-up with director Brad Peyton, San Andreas) plus parents and kids are giving the pic respectively a 90% and 86% score. Another halo effect with Rampage is that Johnson pulls in a multicultural audience with 21% Hispanic, 19% African American, 14% Asian and 43% Caucasian, not to mention there’s a good deal of walk-up business going on here.

In general, the better the Cinemascore, the more likely a film will have good legs. Granted, what defines good legs is open to debate. Also, films with good Cinemascores sometimes have worse legs than films with lower Cinemascores. Basically, if a film has a good Cinemascore, do not surprised if it has good legs but do not expect it to have good legs.

baumer
There's always exceptions to the rule. Wolf of Wall Street had a C cinemascore and went on to have a 6 multiplier.

MovieMan89
Lmao, Rampage is not a "family" movie, nor did it play like one this weekend. The Sat increase was due to the deflated Friday because of F13 and a popular horror option available. If anyone needs further proof the audience was 2/3 over 25 on OW. That's not even close to a typical family film split. Edited April 17, 2018 by MovieMan89

MovieMan89
Deadline can make thinly backed assertions that families were showing up all they want, I'm telling you the actual age breakdown for the weekend proves it wasn't playing like any typical family film. That has nothing to do with kids not showing up at all. There are kids that show up to any PG-13 blockbuster. Tomb Raider's age breakdown on OW wasn't much different, are you going to argue with me that played like a "family film?" Black Panther had a lower over 25 skew than Rampage, didn't see people going around here attributing its holds to being a "family film." WiT was a family film. Peter Rabbit was. Rampage most certainly is not. Edited April 17, 2018 by MovieMan89
The Fast and the Furiosa
I’m hesitant to call Rampage a pure family film. The age breakdown on Pacific Rim Uprising was much closer to that (55/45)
