DAJK
I have no doubt that a lot of movies sell out/100% full. But one thing I've noticed is that a lot of people will come out of a movie saying things like "I'm glad we got seats before that sold out" when really the theatre was only 75% full. It's because the people are more spread out in the theatre with 1 or 2 seats in between large groups of people and then seats right up against the wall and the very front row or 2 empty. Blankments
My theater was legit sold out though, like even the first three rows were full
WrathOfHan
The only time I've been to a 100% sold out show is TS3. TFA, BVS, F7, and AOU were very close to full sellouts but there were still some single seats left. Edited May 6, 2016 by WrathOfHan
DAJK
I've never been in a 100% full movie but I've worked them. Jungle Book 2D on its first Tuesday and plenty of Star Wars shows on its first week.
Wrath
Been in a fair number of sold-out movies recently. First 2 times I saw TFA it was sold out (on consecutive weekends), Inside Out was sold out, and so was GotG. CW was not sold out, but it was quite full, perhaps 90%. The showing after us was sold out, though. Trailers were: X-Men (well received) Magnificent Seven (well received) Warcraft (surprisingly well received) Tarzan (well received) Star Trek (best reception of any movie. I think its that Beastie Boys song, honestly) Independence Day 2 (decent) Alice 2 (lukewarm response) Dr Strange (decent. Might have been better, but when it started, people were murmuring "ANOTHER trailer? wtf?") Edited May 6, 2016 by Wrath
JeepCSC
When I worked at a theatre 15+ years ago, we weren't allowed to do 100% sell-outs because then people that couldn't find seats together would just come out and get refunds. A "sold-out" movie was simply when we stopped selling tickets. Over 80% and our screens would go yellow, over 90% and our screens would go red. Only Phantom Menace did we push down past 95%. Of course now my old theatre is one where you pick your seat. It does now seem to get to 100% or 99% on busy days like today.
