Because Bohemian Rhapsody is literally the exception to the rule? There is no other musical biopic that comes anywhere close to BR. Assuming that any musical biopic about a similarly giant artist will be the same doesn't really make any sense.

Straight Outta Compton was nearly as big as BR domestically. NWA doesn’t have the OS appeal as Queen or MJ. Jackson, like him or not, was a worldwide celebrity.

Elvis also made impressive bank not even two years ago, the difference is Bohemian Rhapsody made close to a billion worldwide, making the respectable totals of that movie and Rocketman appear highly insignificant in comparison. And none of the biopics have been able to repeat its surprise Oscar success either (Rocketman was only nominated for Original Song which it also won, Elvis took home none of its many categories). Just a true lightning in a bottle smash that seems to next to impossible to repeat.

Again, it’s the overseas that’s the difference. Elvis is nowhere close to being as popular overseas as he is in the US and Canada. He never even toured outside of North America. Despite obvious recognition from cultural osmosis, he never had the international appeal of Queen. As for its domestic performance, Elvis ended only something like 50M lower than Bohemian Rhapsody, which accounting for the pandemic effect on older audiences, seems about right.

They said they were going to go there. I doubt you get Miles Teller to play some totally insignificant guy...

Teller, we hear, would play an attorney in the Michael Jackson biopic. Exactly which of Jackson’s attorneys, we will see. The late Howard Weitzman was known for defending Jackson and his estate, in particular against creditor claims and accusations of pedophilia. Then there was Mark Geragos, who assisted Jackson in the early stages of 2005’s People vs. Jackson molestation case, before getting replaced by Thomas Mesereau.

Not sure if this will be any good but I would definitely doubt its box office potential at your own peril. Heck, the potential trainwreck quality is probably a selling point to many here, the man's life was just that strange and difficult to build a conventional biopic out of.

I just don't like the smell of a massive whitewash (excuse the impression) with this film. Count me out.

And this is even without the pedophilia angle. Jackson's did not have a happy ending.

It's so upsetting.

And tragic. Which is why giving this a uplifitng ending a la Bohemian Rahpsody would be so phony.

Jackson was like the guy who would been his father in law: he had everything, could not handle  it and it destroyed him.
