Why is Saturday look so strong across the board?

G:A is posting semi-Croods hold in this late run. LP seem having better WOM from general audiences than other Oscar hopeful. Its hold has been very good aside from 2nd week. Hope this boost its Oscar chance further into race.

There was no NFL football like last week when there were 2 insane high profile Saturday games.

Wow, you always have interesting data 👍

You gave me the idea to make a comparison between the 5 highest grossing movies in USA and China, with and without the help of Canada:

Usa + Canada

The Force Awakens 936M
Endgame 858M

Avatar 760M
No Way Home 736M

Black Panther 700M

China

The Battle at Lake Changjin 911M

Wolf Warrior 2 874M

Hi Mom 821M

Ne Zha 719M

The Wandering Earth 694M

Usa

The Force Awakens 841M
Endgame 775M
No Way Home 684M
Avatar 663M

Black Panther 641M

Don't forget that those China numbers are bullshit and inflated by the communist government.

The lack of options is working out really well for NWH in these later days. But I guess that's what Sony was going for when they moved Morbius. Also gives them space to focus on Uncharted. It would be easier to sell Morbius as a tie-in to NWH and MCU. (which is also why I never thought that Sony/Disney deal wouldn't continue)

Wait until you see NWH get a surprise BP nomination at the Oscar , reliving its buzz, and people especially those from Ontorio in Canada go to the cinema to see NWH.

Really ?

Absolutely.  They inflate their state propaganda films like Battle at Lake Changjin through box office manipulation and mandatory viewing.

It's not an accident that the second they started cutting Hollywood films out or limiting them, that suddenly there was a plethora of propaganda films that put up these massive record breaking numbers.

The communist government is in a desperate struggle to regain control of their population and remove as much western influence as they can and as quickly as they can.  It has been going on in a huge way the last 18 months in everything from entertainment to fashion to food to media to education.

China underestimated just how quickly they would develop.  They went from a poor rural agrarian economy and population that was easily controlled and manipulated to a booming middle and upper class that acquired a taste for everything Western from Hollywood films to European fashion to sending all the rich kids off to the United States to be educated and was not easily manipulated.

There has been a concerted effort from the Xi and hardliners to retain their power and get the people back under control.

Source?

Multiple people with the MPAA and NATO.  They already busted the shit out of Chinese distributors and theaters on a smaller scale back in 2017, and starting shortly after that the Chinese government started doing it to put the propaganda films at the top of their box office.

They not only don't want the Western and Hollywood influence, but they can take more from their domestic box office now.

You can read about what started being discovered back in 2017 (because Hollywood finally called bullshit and hired auditors to comb through the Chinese box office numbers).

If you want more public info, a Google search puts you on the right track.  The current stuff is being kept fairly quiet, because Hollywood is in a spot where some of the executives really really want to placate the Chinese government and have their films still be played.

https://screenrant.com/china-box-office-reporting-wolf-warrior/2/

These are execs who are at the corporate and high up level that have jobs that are much easier if they can plug in China to their release plans and count on it to push them over the top of any set financial goals.

On the other hand, you have other execs and producers/creators that have a spine and don't want to have to get on their knees and manipulate their art to suck up to a corrupt communist government.  Stuff like adding token roles, weird edits, story changes and garbage to make sure China won't get upset.  Crap like changing the patches on a jacket that show support of Taiwan.

Then you also have the extra confusion of Chinese companies like Skydance / Tencent and Alibaba that provide the money to produce a lot of films that wouldn't get made if they weren't producing them.

That's what I don't get Sony moved morbius for nwh benefit but let uncharted stay

Because they didn't do it for NWH's benefit. They did it to have another film in Q2 to boost financial numbers when they report that quarters earnings. They didn't need it in Q1 thanks to NWH's over-performance. They may also believe the spacing will give people more time to get interested in Morbius.

Idk about all that...

As of right now I'd expect NWH drop to be right around this weeks. Yea there won't be football next week, but there will be new openings that take away screens. I also believe next weekend is going to be extremely cold so weather wise, similar to this weekend.

Ontario sends its regard 👀

Sorry bro  but China box office is way more publicly available. The same information that comscore charges ton of money & even more is given in free for anyone to check.

The audit Hollywood had didn't say box office was overreported but some theaters were underreporting which is fairly common in Asia.

Didn’t really want to get into the China thing here which is often driven more by weird nationalistic emotions than facts, but since it’s been responded to — yeah, the actual fraud that was found is exhibitors underreporting gross so they can keep more, which artificially deflates BO nums, not inflates them.

China being world's biggest market was done in mid 2010s. The only thing was tickets were cheap & ER was falling. Which is being taken care now as ATP for event films reach $9.25 & ER is improving.

$1B in a single market isn't even really that big deal. The question is when China delivers $1.5B film, as in spirit they have done with WW2 having 160M admits.

And I wish Chinese govt give as many fucks as Western media report they do about box office. Visit China thread often to know about things.

That absolutely isn't true, Charlie.

As far as the China box office, it's heavily manipulated.  Just because you can see the manipulation in real time means nothing.
