94th Academy Awards Discussion Thread | WHAT JUST HAPPENED

The "Vote For the Worst" mentality never fails. The fact whoever thought this Twitter Oscar thing would be a good idea would mean an automatic win for Marvel (only to discover that stans for that franchise aren't nearly as devoted as Cabello or Snyder ones lmao).

Also the article points out how Disney movies are practically nonexistent from the category when this (and that failed Popular Oscar thing from a few years back) seemed introduced primarily to give them (and Sony-made Spider-Man) an easy win. Sing 2 over Encanto even though the latter has become a Frozen-style sensation since it began streaming? lol. I guess they can take solace in knowing that they're taking home at least one, possibly two, awards in the acting categories this year.

I'm only surprised The Power of the Dog is up there, since it's the Best Picture frontrunner with 12 nominations, I'd figured the fans would be content. But Cumbrrbatch has stans and PotD people get very defensive at the criticism of the movie being "inaccessible", so both groups would want to win a Twitter poll to prove something.

The Fan Favorite poll is appealing to groups that need their movie to get some sort of validation it hasn't gotten already. Tick Tick Boom didn't get into Best Picture and Andrew probably won't win Best Actor, so the Garfield stans vote a ton. No Way Home is top 10 but not dominatihg like you'd expect, for its massive popularity. If half the fans are all "Screw the Academy" because of the Best Picture snub  they're not going to be that enthusiastic about voting for a fake Twitter Oscar. Same story with House of Gucci. Encanto is likely to win Animated Feature and the music is everywhere: the fans already know it's a success where it counts.

Honestly, outside of this thread that I learnt enchanto and their song is a massive phenomenon. The movie is hardly a everyone talked about sensation at overseas. I can’t feel anything from enchanto that come close to frozen like those days during frozen mania.

Even the Oscars are looking to ride the Yellowstone wave.

Maybe Kevin Costner is introducing The Power of the Dog, or maybe he's presenting Best Picture: he has the stature for the category and is a former winner there. Hopefully, he's a bit more enlightened than fellow Yellowstone Expanded Universe castmate Sam Elliott and won't look annoyed to announce it.

Some messy people on Twitter hope Gaga is presenting Best Actress, but Original Song seems more likely, especially with Will Packer wanting to have cast reunions as presenters.

Ridiculous...

Quote

Another governor of a branch that has lost a category from the live telecast, who wishes to remain nameless, says he was jarred when, over the summer, he received a call from Hudson explaining why significant changes to the format of the Oscars were necessary. This governor says that he was told that ABC had warned the Academy that it would cancel the Oscars telecast, via a clause in the Academy and ABC’s deal for the Oscars’ broadcasting rights, if 12 categories were not removed from the show. “We were told we’d have to sacrifice something or we were going to lose the whole show,” this governor recaps.

Why would the Academy agree to that kind of contract, and what would happen if ABC did cancel the Oscars telecast? Couldn't some other network/streamer swoop in and get the rights? For less money but still a considerable amount, and it would be better to deal with a network/streamer that isn't so stuck in the past. Also  diversify your income, AMPAS!

The telecast was pretaped and an hour long last year, yet the ratings doubled when it was a live show and twice as long, fancy that. Also, they give out nothing but acting awards on the telecast, none of the "boring" technical categories...and yet, all the people who complain about the Oscars being too long didn't flock to watch the SAGs.

It's absolutely wild how out of touch ABC is. Like come on, Walt Disney Company. If you were just able to renegotiate the terms with Netflix on a bunch of Ryan Murphy shows to get them on Hulu you can change the terms for this so that you're no longer completely dependent on TV for money too.

Time for a conspiracy theory

Now they're even forcing Will Packer to get in the damage control field lmao. How long until they try and hire Judy Smith (the lady who inspired Scandal) to fix all of this?

The ceremony has forgot why people watch it - the awards is the main thing, everything else is window dressing.

They are chasing a viewer who doesn't exist with all this nonsense

This year is shaping up to be so messy that I'm impressed they haven't announced that Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway will be announcing all the winners (3 hours of misplaced envelope shenanigans!). If hitting rock bottom in their desperate attempts to get 40 million viewers back is what their plan is then hey, don't stop on my account.
