lab276
It's like the world cup didn't even happen in 2002.
IndustriousAngel
Yep, in 2002, we had "special" circumstances - the double punch of Star Wars - AotC and SpiderMan was able to survive football, real blockbusters - and of course, the games were in Korea, so from the timing no competition for theaters. Whereas the Brasilian games start at 18:00 and 21:00 german time, so direct competition. But the thing is, if a movie is interesting enough for audiences, they will go see it. So, the fact that numbers drop with football has two reasons - ok, a lot of men are sitting in front of their tv, BUT it's also the fact that theater managers and distributors keep those weeks free from big releases (look at the last and coming weekend here ... no chance of big numbers even completely without football)

And it's been low enough in non-football years to make me think that there's not really much that can be done about it.
IndustriousAngel
First weekend trend: TFioS thays 1# with a meager 100k admissions, everything else below ... ugh
miketheavenger
I really hope DOFP reaches 1m admissions. If it manages another good hold this weekend, that might be possible, but especially Saturday evening/night will be very weak due to Germany vs Ghana. IndustriousAngel
Good news from Germany: Family stuff went up in second estimates, so now at least 3 movies are exceeding 100k admissions ... small victories #1:TFioS - 135k #2/3: Maleficent and Pirate Fairy with 110k each (that's actually an increase for PF and very small drops for holdovers). None of the openers seems to be able to make it into the Top10 though - and with Germany playing at 9pm theaters will be empty tonight.

Still very low numbers overall - and with only "Walk of Shame" opening semiwide, the next one doesn't look like a breakout weekend either. WoS should make it into the Top3 but I would be surprised if it came in #1 ... I am so happy for Maleficent!
IndustriousAngel
To put things into perspective - Maleficent is trending towards 20mil US$ in Austria + Germany combined. Compare some recent Disney features: Tangled and Frozen each made more than 50mil. Still not bad considering the cruel circumstances. IndustriousAngel
hmmm, seems like I was too optimistic for "Walk of Shame"; first trend has it only at #4: #1: TFioS - 100k admissions #2: Maleficent - 75k #3: PirateFairy - 70k #4: WoS - 55k edit: Final weekend trend: With rain prevailing, especially afternoons are doing better than expected. Still TFiOS will propably be the only one to beat 100k. Edited June 29, 2014 by IndustriousAngel
