justnumbers
Maybe Nickel Boys. Queer. Sing Sing. A Complete Unknown. The Piano Lesson. MAYBE Blitz. Honestly I don't believe in Gladiator 2 (predicting huge drop in quality) nor Sacred Fig.
filmlover
Based on reception out of Telluride (some were not fond of it), Nickel Boys seems like it's going the route of Till and Origin. The box office will likely be very small. Conclave will happen, Focus is a good campaigner and it'll be their #1 priority. It's between A Complete Unknown and A Real Pain as to what will be Searchlight's main push.
WorkingonaName
Predicting ACU to flop purely due to the academy's anti-twink bias.
filmlover
Unless A Complete Unknown somehow ends up a critical disaster, it should be good for at least a lone Best Actor nomination, the fact Chalamet's doing his own singing (when most actors who play iconic musicians in biopics don't) will be seen as a plus to voters. He's also at the right point in his career for a potential second nomination (it took Leo and Gosling a decade or more to receive their second noms) and he'll be having a good year between this and Dune 2.
vale9001
Good reviews for queer but for what i read really not Academy material. Craig seems a strong contender for a nominee as actor but for the movie or director i really doubt. Edited September 3 by vale9001
AniNate
Queer reviews definitely don't seem unanimous enough to rule out Sing Sing here. Also A24 still has We Live in Time debuting at TIFF, that could be another potential push. They were able to get two movies into the field last year. Cmasterclay
I think the praise for Nickel Boys seems several levels beyond Till and Origin tbh. Can see it winning some of the critical precursors or at least battling the Brutalist and Anora for them. Probably won't make money or win Picture but it has quite a few "masterpiece" level notes going for it that certainly Till and mostly Origin never had.

filmlover
Rooting for Emilia Perez becoming a major contender to give us Oscar Nominee Selena Gomez (just months after receiving her first acting Emmy nomination).
Rorschach
Emilia Perez will likely be Netflix's big push this year, and they've gotten at least one film in every single year since ROMA was nominated, so definitely predicting that one.
filmlover
Joker 2 seems dead completely with the reception it's already getting out of Venice. Kind of fascinating how WB put out three follow-ups to Best Picture nominees (Mad Max: Fury Road, Joker, Dune) from the past decade this year and it appears as if only one is looking to prove its success wasn't a fluke.
vale9001
Seems like Almodovar is back on Venice for the award cerimony. Let's see if he's gonna win the Golden Lion. If happening is definitely a good push for his movie is an english language movie with academy award winner actresses. Plus the academy loves Almodovar as we know. So could strongly enter in the award season race (also for Picture imo). The other strong contender seems to be the american movie The Brutalist by Brady Corbet but I don't know... it would be the third consecutive american movie to win and the fourth of five this decade... Anyways even just a jury prize would put the movie on award spotlight imo seeing how venice lately has been important for the Oscars (shape of water, roma, nomadland, joker, poor things they all got a Best picture nominee). vale9001
I read Nickel boys and I don't know if it's gonna be one of the movies of this award season ...of course the movie can be a different thing and feels different but seems like lately in the world of cinema the discussion about movies with black stories and black characters is more about "emporwement" or "satire-comedy"...this is a very very explicit and violent story about racism. Even black journalists, critics and influencers, while of course every kinda of story can be represented, seems to prefer lately when the award spotlight is on these kinda of stories and not what they call pure "black trauma dramas". And this story really is that., not that far away from 12 years slave. Edited September 8 by vale9001
