The Wind Rises has no problem once again defending it's #1 spot for a 7th-consecutive week, delivering maybe it's most impressive weekend result to date. It will be exceeding ¥10 billion ($100 million+) pretty soon.

An increase was possible this weekend since Sunday was the 1st of the month, but most increases on these weekends are in the single digits (admissions increase was over 30%!). There could very well be a Venice Film Festival effect starting, too, with the strong reception there, and now with Miyazaki's retirement making headlines, it won't be slowing down for awhile, especially if Miyazaki or the film win anything in Venice.

Solid for Man of Steel. The estimate is below the debut of Superman Returns, but it's an alright opening nonetheless. It's 3-day total is probably around ¥350 million ($3.6 million).

Pretty bad for Sadako 3D 2. Since it's playing almost exclusively in 3D, it might end up a little higher tomorrow.

Films ranked 7th-9th are too close to be certain where they'll be with actuals.

Since Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day is a limited releases, it's estimate is being compared to two films that had twice as many screens, so I'm not bothering posting it. Anytime the comparisons between films differ that much in screen counts, estimates are way off. However, they do indicate the film did REALLY well and could make the Top 5 or maybe Top 3.

This weekend numbers were boosted by discount Sunday(1st of every month)MOS is heading to 15M total.

I see, so the OW is inflated. Thanks. TWR number is still very impressive. It wins the weekend so comfortably.

The Wind Rises Box-Office Proceeds ExpectedTo Reach ¥15 billion ($150 million+) Following Hayao Miyazaki's Retirement.

Following Hayao Miyazaki's retirement announcement, people swarmed cinemas Monday morning for a chance to see his final work, The Wind Rises, in theaters. Hayao Miyazaki will make his retirement official on Saturday during a press conference.

At one location, the Toho La Scala cinema, had it's busiest day of the year on Monday, when over 100 people were lined up overnight, with the line eventually reaching 300 strong before Monday afternoon. 790 people across four showtimes saw the film on Monday, exceeding the previous single-day high of 600 during Obon Festival week. The manager at the cinema reported between 30-40 phone calls per hour inquiring about the film.[Popular NTV also cancelled it's regular broadcast on Friday night which included the last 'Wolverine' film to promote the newest film opening in 2 weeks and will show 'Porco Rosso' instead].The Wind Rises has remained atop the box-office for 7-consecutive weeks, and has earned ¥8,848,006,850 ($91 million) and 7,148,485 admissions so far.

Wow, this announcement really boosted the movie :o

A great man is leaving us! I really need to watch this movie, even if it's not appealing to me unlike his previous movies.
