JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

I just read that Disney anounced having passed the $2b border WW in 2014.

$636m DOM and $1419m OS. That would mean 69% from OS. I normaly calculate with 62% OS for an average Blockbuster (animated movies have higher values and Superhero movies lower). Why has a big studio such a high OS percentage overall?

The answer is of course FROZEN.

In 2014 Frozen made $137.5m domestically  and $588m internationally (in the end perhaps almost half of that in Japan).

If you subtract these amounts form Disneys' gross, you again get your 62% OS percentage like usually.

137.5 : 588

that is almost Ice Age-like

161.3 : 715.9

Slightly higher I read that on July 16 when it came out DVD/BluRay edition of Frozen in Japan it seems to be cost 45 dollars. When ticket price of 12$ in theaters I do not see how the DVD/BluRay edition of 45$ will prevent the box office rezults. Hardly Japanese people are dumb to buy DVD for 45$ provided that for the money can go to watch movie the whole family.

Down 10% for both mon and tues. Multiplier was 10% low last midweek but 10% high for the weekend.. 5-5.5m midweek looking likely and a 12m+ week possibleFrom what I can tell on Amazon japan, the english version is available for purchace. I've wondered if retailers would ship an english dvd when a foriegn release is later in the run. Studios have massive openings now and a quick dvd release to curb against piracy they say. Then why in the world wouldnt they release a movie world wide within a months time of dom They are undermining their own box office like piracy. No wonder subbed is doing so poorly. Could you imagine if the english dvd wasn't available for the last 3 month. Could be 10% more. 230m. The fact that dvd is available and subbed is doing 10% of BO lends hope that the movie could do well after july 16. Would have been amazing to see the summer bump though with midweeks doubling and possibly getting back over 10m for the week and even hold 100% for a week or two with all the moviegoers available. I think it had a real shot at beating domestic.Write disney. Stop the bluray release!http://thewaltdisneycompany.com/contact-us/corporate-communications

If they could release a film at the same time everywhere, they would. In Japan at least, it looks like it's better hold off for a while (compare The Hobbit with LOTR).

In Vienna/Austria you can watch almost any major International movie in German and in the Original language (mostly English, some french or whatever). Even though a lot of people speak English, most prefer to watch a movie in German. Simply because it is hard to be fluent in all the slang expressions sometimes used.

Most movies get out in Japan long after the English DVDs have been issued. For those where the Japanese BO run is before that date, does that effect the ratio dubbed:subbed?

nice post. If you could add to the end that they are going to kill this run with a dvd release on july 16th write them to stop it.http://thewaltdisneycompany.com/contact-us/corporate-communicationslike you said, flat for 12 weeks. Its the same as releasing the dvd six weeks after OW on a movie you know will be huge.

There was a market share shift for the past week. Midweek TMK1  was short 10+, it over 10%+ on the weekend. This werks number could be higher or lower by10%. We, get screen daily number on Friday. The percentage difference is from last weeks actual. 1.60m-10% Mon0.60m-10% Tue209.7 total

that has to be their assumption not Disney's statement. A corporation will impoverish a nation to save 50m on manufacturing shoes by moving the plant to china. Miyazaki's is retired not dead and they wouldnt forego 50m in either case. I have never seen a movie close while still making 10m per week.Sounds like an urban legend. Like the $100 Mercedes Benz. The news report is from cinematoday jp , which says Frozen is scheduled to stop screening in July.

The report also says that it is hard for Frozen to surpass Titanic by 7/16.
