Thanks Ed! Strong weekly holds for Maleficent! Was last week deflated post-holiday weekend?

Last week wednesday had half admissions of previous sunday, this week wednesday had the same admissions than previous sunday. So i think last sunday (and saturday) was very deflated.

Corpse, do you have the imported/local shares ? With Frozen being such a huge success, I was wondering if imported films might get over 50% for the first time in almost a decade.

Right now it looks like maybe 56% (Domestic) / 44% (Imported).

There's nothing really notable that Hollywood has left for the remainder of the year besides Transformers 4, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Interstellar, and Big Hero 6.  Interstellar and Big Hero 6 may have breakout potential, but they come much later in the year, especially Big Hero 6 (Dec. 20th).

Japan still has several bigger films coming up and the advantage of releasing more films, too.  Even with Frozen, the domestic share isn't in trouble of falling below 50% and may end up at 60%+ again.

Weekend Forecast (08/02-03)

Posted Image

01 (--) ¥470 million ($4.6 million), 0, ¥690 million ($6.7 million), Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc (Warner Bros.) NEW
02 (01) ¥304 million ($3.0 million), -41%, ¥1.40 billion ($13.6 million), Godzilla (Toho) Week 2
03 (02) ¥228 million ($2.2 million), -24%, ¥4.60 billion ($45.1 million), Maleficent (Disney) Week 5
04 (03) ¥174 million ($1.7 million), -21%, ¥1.50 billion ($14.5 million), Memories of Marnie (Toho) Week 3
05 (04) ¥139 million ($1.3 million), -31%, ¥1.40 billion ($13.6 million), Pokemon XY: The Cocoon of Destruction & Diancie (Toho) Week 3
06 (05) ¥72 million ($0.7 million), -43%, ¥320 million ($3.1 million), Eight Ranger 2 (Toho) Week 2
07 (06) ¥59 million ($0.6 million), -29%, ¥520 million ($5.0 million), Kamen Rider Gaim the Movie: The Great Soccer Match! (Toei) Week 3
08 (07) ¥50 million ($0.5 million), -25%, ¥750 million ($7.3 million), Say, "I Love You" (Shochiku) Week 4
09 (10) ¥33 million ($0.3 million), -28%, ¥310 million ($3.0 million), Planes: Fire & Rescue (Disney) Week 3
10 (08) ¥30 million ($0.3 million), -46%, ¥1.46 billion ($14.3 million), Edge of Tomorrow (Warner Bros.) Week 5

>Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc, the first half of the sequel to the 2012 original hit, opened yesterday (Friday) and did approx. ¥220 million ($2.1 million), which earned it the best Friday opening of the year.

Granted, Friday was the 1st of the month when tickets are 40% off at all major chains (hence the Friday release), but it's still very impressive.  But while impressive, the big Friday number should deflate the weekend frame and reaching ¥500 million ($5 million) looks too difficult.  The 3-day results, however, should come in quite high.  I won't be surprised if its 3-day is ahead of Godzilla's 3-day last weekend.

>The holdovers should all see good holds with Maleficent and Memories of Marnie seeing the best holds if the past week was any indication.  Both films played very well over the past 5 days and have pre-sales for today not far off of last Saturday's.

Corpse, I think you posted an article that mentioned that the 40+ year old male demographic is driving Godzilla in Japan. Would you happen to have that link handy? I went back and looked and can't find it.

That was an assumption on my part based on its avg. ticket price (films with higher avg. ticket prices generally skew toward older males), and seeing how it fared on Wednesday (Ladies Day), quite poorly, helps support that, too.

Thanks, that makes total sense.

After all the morning showings,  Rurouni Kenshin looks about even with Godzilla last weekend.  Kenshin really took off in the evening yesterday, so it might be end up with a higher opening weekend than Godzilla (at least in admissions).

All the holdovers are doing very well.  Memories of Marnie is holding the best among the Top 10 right now and may see a sub-20% drop, and all the other films are looking at drops in the 20-30% range at this point except for Godzilla and Eight Ranger 2.  Godzilla is down about 45% compared to last week at the same point in time, but I think that'll improve a little bit.  And Eight Ranger 2 is down over 70%, but its opening day was quite inflated last week so that's expected.

Rurouni Kenshin is tracking ahead of Godzilla at the four chains when combined by 9% at the mid-day point.  If it can keep this lead, or improve upon it, then it has a good chance at beating Godzilla's opening last weekend.  Godzilla sold 70,710 tickets last Saturday at these locations.

Maleficent will finish the weekend with ~$46M in Japan and a ~$493-4M ONA total. At the WW BO, X-Men: DofP is going down. I wonder though if GotG could out-gross Maleficent, a possibility with increased likeliness since the early numbers came in (higher than Cap 2 in NA and elsewhere).

Japan had been the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow for Disney. Hopefully BH6 will follow suit

Japan seems to welcome any movie with a good story.

An Indian movie is doing decent and may exceed $1 million at Japan Box office. Might not seem like much but it is a lot of money for an Indian movie from a country like Japan.
