'Umizaru 4' now has a commanding hold on the #1 spot of 2012. Only 'Bayside Shakedown 4' has any shot at beating it now.

'Wolf Children' enters the Top 5 after 6 weeks and 'Pokemon 15' makes the Top 10 after 7 weeks, knocking 'Spider-Man' out of a Top 10 spot this year.

'Avengers' holds pretty well and lands in the Top 15 after 13 days.

'Kamen Rider' and 'Eight Ranger' debut on the charts.

Wednesday Estimates (Ladies' Day)

Rank - Gross - Wed.-to-Wed. Change - Film - Dis. - Day in Release

1 (-) ¥136 million ($1.7 million), 0, :: Rurouni Kenshin :: Warner Bros. :: 5

2 (-) ¥92 million ($1.2 million), 0, :: Dear (To You) :: Toho :: 5

3 (2) ¥87 million ($1.1 million), -18%, :: The Wolf Children Ame and Yuki :: Toho :: 40

6 (-) ¥67 million ($850,000), 0, :: Prometheus :: FOX :: 6

7 (4) ¥57 million ($720,000), -26%, :: Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted :: Paramount :: 29

8 (5) ¥28 million ($350,000), -48%, :: Pokemon: Kyurem Vs. The Sacred Swordsman :: Toho :: 47

9 (-) ¥23 million ($290,000), 0, :: Ushijima the Loan Shark :: SPD :: 5

10 (7) ¥16 million ($200,000), -40%, :: Kamen Rider Fourze: Everyone, Space is Here! :: TOEI :: 26

Note: Wednesday is Ladies' Day, making it the biggest weekday. Films that skew female obviously benefit the most, and also during the summer and any time school is out, family films perform especially well on Wednesdays, too. When school is in though, family films are generally the weakest during the weekdays.

Thanks. TA should have passed 30M. It's probably around 30.2-30.5M. Next target TASM around 40M.

Great to see the Japanese market responding to a non Spider-man marvel film. Looks like Avengers has already earned as much in Japan as IM, IM2, Thor, and Cap combined (about $30 million).If Marvel can manage a Japanese release for TA2 closer to the WW release, Japan might contribute $75-80 million.

Biggest Movie Franchises in Japan (¥25 billion+):

Film - Revenue - Film Entries

1. Harry Potter :: ¥96.57 billion [8]

2. Pokemon :: ¥68.48 billion [15]

3. Doraemon :: ¥67.74 billion [32]

4. Detective Conan :: ¥41.34 billion [16]

5. Star Wars :: ¥40.04 billion [6]

6. Pirates of the Caribbean :: ¥36.59 billion [4]

7. Bayside Shakedown :: ¥34.76 billion [3]

8. Jurassic Park :: ¥27.48 billion [3]

9. The Lord of the Rings :: ¥27.29 billion [3]

10. The Matrix :: ¥26.40 billion [3]

11. Umizaru :: ¥25.38 billion [4]

Updated using the final totals for the latest Doraemon and Detective Conan films, and the likely final totals for the current Umizaru and Pokemon films in release.

The final Bayside Shakedown film opens next weekend and will propel the franchise above Pirates, Star Wars, and probably Detective Conan as well.

Films opening later in Japan actually help them in the market by boosting promotion and awareness if the film is a hit in the U.S. and everywhere else. The Avenger's reviews and box office were able to show executives the film may also be big in Japan, so it was moved to Obon Week and was given a very wide (24% of screens opening week) release. If it had been released in May, it'd have been overshadowed by Thermae Romae and it'd have to share 3D screens with MIB 3. It also wouldn't have grossed nearly as much as it's going to now.Most films released at the same time as the worldwide release tend to disappoint. This year has many in Battleship, John Carter, Brave, and to a lesser extent, Spider-Man. Pixar for example needs to move back to December after Monsters U (I'd delay this one to Dec. too if possible, it's up against Hayao Miyazaki currently). Edited by Corpse

Maybe not, but it'll be a mistake on their part if it isn't already. With the exception of Toy Story 3 (highly anticipated sequel + 3D), their top 3 films were all released outside of Summer. Finding Nemo and The Incredibles in December, and Monsters, Inc. in March.At least they should consider it for their original films.

There's a slight chance. The Sept. 14-15 weekend will probably decide it.

Thanks. I'm just curious. What do you think happens with TA 2? An increase, decrease or flat? I'm just wondering if TA was lightning striking or if other movies can build on it's success. Edited by druv10
