Korea gained independence on Aug 15th, 1945 due to Japan's surrender in WW2 and I wondered why both Korea's and India's independence days coincide on the same date although Korea was ruled by one of the Axis countries and India by one of the Allies. Wikipedia says in 1947 India's then viceroy chose the second anniversary of Japan's surrender as the date of power transfer from the Britain to India. It's a weird release date considering most students holidays will be nearing the end by that time. also they won't be able to take advantage of the Lunar new years holiday either which starts in Jan. Of course, South Korea was one of the first countries to see that movie. think they are confident in this one having a leggy run given its February slot, so that it can benefit from rather empty market in March and April just as how it worked for Zootopia. They could still move it to mid January if its run in the North America looks as phenomenal as Frozen, so that it could build up some hype before the lunar new year holidays in the last week of Jan and then have it explode there. But for now nothing's proven yet and sending it immediately to the deathbed that is one of the most competitive movie seasons seems risky. Especially so since middle-aged to senior parental age group holds the most ticket power during the season and tends to get the deciding vote on which movie to see during those holidays when all the family gather, so local titles with "adult" themes like familial love and patriarchal sacrifices with cheesy comic relifs usually do much better than Hollywood family films. and we don't know what kinda local competitions Moana would face yet if it gets released around then. Feb is safer and wiser for now imo, unless Moana's something wildly exceptional. Sooooo think they are confident enough that it would potentially recreate the Zootopia magic (4.7M adm and the super sexy legs during the empty season) but not so much so for the Frozen kinda extravaganza. From what I see, most big countries get it at the end of December/beginning of Jan and Japan only gets it in March. Fantastic Beats and Rogue one will likely suck all the air from the OS box office, much more so than from the DOM market. Very crude works for kids only, which also dilutes the novelty of actually relevant family tentpole releases like Disney/Pixar cause for those who don't care "they all look the same anyway" haha and when it comes to the original Ben Hur, guess the distribution company decided to utilize it and get some cash before the new Ben Hur comes along (which would fail miserably) national re-release of old classics have become a fad anyway. And I think it's a good window for both younger and older generations. After all, those who got to see the initial releases of the classics saw the severely censored versions for political and financial decisions. Koreans used to and still generally HATE movie musicals besides a very few exceptions, and there's been an unconfirmed rumor for a long while that they cut ALL the songs from the Sound of Music when they first screened it in the 70s, because people didn't like it and it made the movie "too long", which was not good for the box office. HAHAHA Yeah the censor/quota system of the pre-Shiri era must have screwed a lot of Hollywood films over. Although it is also partly responsible for the holy trinity of Park Chan Wook, Bong Joon Ho and Kim Jeewoon emerging as the lack of Hollywood titles plus horrible domestic releases drove the cinephiles to watching French and German and other world cinema at embassies etc as they were the best things available to watch. Especially with Park Chan Wook I think you can see that French noir influence in his work (especially sound) that maybe would not have happened with a Korean film industry like today's. Does the quota still exist? I know it was still in effect 10 years ago but to pretty much ineffectual levels. It seems odd that I film with the Rock can't get a release. Surprisingly it still does, even with the over 50% market share for Korean movies! but now it's diminished to the 73 days quota from the former 146 days one. and dear lord, Left Behind. hahaha. I think it's definitely a Christian influence. Chariot of Fire re-release was supported and promoted by some big churches here recently.. and now Ben-Hur and this...
