tupek
For a long time I thought South Korea would be one of the markets where Avatar would never be outgrossed (like Russia or Australia)... but that's going to happen at last!Awesome , really really awesome and it still has a lot of run! Rsyu
Roaring currents gross in local currency (KRW) is 102.48 billion KRW. It needs an additional 25.97 billion won or 3.4 million admissions to pass Avatar in local currency.

keysersoze123
I think its lock. It would probably gross another 1.4/1.5M admissions sat/sun. Another 2 million after this sunday is not that difficult. It just needs to hold not too bad for next 2 weeks.

Sure. 2014 is definitely a year where it is more interesting to follow BO runs outside US: Frozen in Japan, Transformers 4 in China, Qu'est-ce qu'on a fait au Bon Dieu? in France, 8 apellidos vascos in Spain or this beast in South Korea.

Rsyu
Pirates doing really well too!May I ask why the 2003 Pokemon movie is in the top 10? Pirates will pass Kundo for sure. Just goes to show how important word of mouth can be I guess Don't quote me on this but apparently the it's is being released as a dubbed version to advertise the remake versions of pokemon games (Ruby and Sapphire) that are being released around November this year. Anyway this marks the 6th official pokemon film to be released in Korea, I have no idea why they didn't release the others since Pokemon is pretty popular here.
KATCH-2D2
Are there any Hollywood movies opening soon or in the next few weeks? Good luck taking the audience away from the local movies.

Yeah there's a few 8/20 Magic in the moonlight TE3 The Giver 8/28 TMNT Into the Storm Tazza and Brilliant Life (local films) drops on 9/03 though so competition will be pretty tough for these releases too. TE1&2 did less than $3m in 2012 so TE3 is screwed in SK regardless. Why did the movies do so badly here? Hope TMNT wouldn't get killed by RC like a few movies before it. Rsyu
TE1&2 did less than $3m in 2012 so TE3 is screwed in SK regardless. Why did the movies do so badly here? Hope TMNT wouldn't get killed by RC like a few movies before it. The major target audience for films in korea are people in the 20-30 age group and while most people certainly know of the actors that appear in the Expendables series, they haven't really watched their major films such as Rambo, Commando, Once upon a time in China and universal soldier etc. So yeah basically the nostalgia factor that appeared in other markets was non-existent here. 90's style action films in itself lost popularity big time, the most notable bomb being Rambo 4 (2008) which managed a mere 108,473 admissions ($706K) As for TMNT, as shown by the Pirates, if a film has good word of mouth then it can survive no matter how big the competition is Roaring currents should start slowing down big time too next week onwards.
Rsyu
I must sound like a broken record saying this but Roaring currents passed 14 million admissions today (6 AM local time: CJ entertainments) basically during the first showing of the day. The pirates will pass 4 million admissions during today also, to become the 10th film to pass that mark during 2014. HTTYD2 will cross over 2.9 million adm with sundays numbers. 3 million should happen as long as it doesn't completely collapse on monday.
Rsyu
13 Million admissions films comparison [Graph] X: Days Y: admissions As you can see, the angle of the slope is completely different between Roaring currents and The host/Avatar. Another key variation is how each film behaved after reaching 10 million admissions. Avatar and The host both lost a lot of momentum after reaching 10 million, taking an extra 36 and 74 days respectively to add 3 million more admissions after that. In contrast, Roaring currents took just 5 days to reach 13 million after hitting 10 million admissions. There's no way of telling in what way or form Roaring currents will slow down from here on out but if it behaves anything like The host or avatar, I can see it adding another 3-4 million to it's current score. If it manages better holds and remains strong until Chuseok (A week-long national holiday starting from the second week of september) then it could go even higher.
