A beautifully shot but somewhat emotionally shallow movie. The Nicest Man Alive™ Tom Hanks was terribly miscast as a dreaded gangster. He was just bad in this movie, and he's one of my favorite actors.

Paul Newman, Daniel Craig and Jude Law (who was in the movie way too little) were all terrific. The time period was captured nicely and as I said, the movie is gorgeous to look at.

I never really got an emotional connection to any of the characters.

I liked Hanks' portrayal of the character. I thought he fit it well. This character being a nice guy matched up well with him not wanting to do this line of work anymore. Agreed about Law, needed more screen time. Don't remember Craig in it, he was obviously forgettable like in most other movies.

A very good movie. I liked Hanks' interpretation a lot, and despite what Jack is saying, I felt emotionally connected to him at the end of the movie when he died. The cinematography is excellent and Conrad C. Hall deserved his Oscar.

One thing that I thought didn't fit with the movie was the ending. Even though I was very, very sad that Hanks died, the scene was added just to give Jude Law something to do there. I mean he shouldn't have been in the movie from the beginning, since he's the only original character in the whole movie (he never appeared in the book). The perfect ending of the movie should've been Hanks shooting them all, taking his revenge, and then continue leaving with his son at the beach house. That wide shot of the beach house, with that score in the background and Tom Hank's smile as he watched his son play with the dog, made me tear up, but the thing what followed destroyed everything. I knew it would happen, I was certain it would happen, and I was disappointed that it happened. That last scene ruined the movie for me, honestly. Nothing to do there.

The sound of waves as Tom Hanks was looking out the window was one of the most ominous sounds I've ever heard. Anyway, a beautifully shot film with an even more beautiful score, and great performances and direction. Also, a big shout-out to the art department for the costume and set design.
