The Last Samurai...  film special for Japan.  So I will not surprise it grossed more than North America.

However, I do surprise that Pacific Rim did a lot a lot a lot better in China than Japan.  Pacific Rim is a Japanese friendly film. (1. starring by Japanese actor  2. Robots VS Monsters) plus Guillermo Del Toro was in Japan to promote Pacific Rim.

Guillermo Del Toro seems very happy in Japan.

Pacific Rim Leads Strong but softer than Expected Qixi Day

With early estimates for Tuesday overal box office range from 113M to 122M (actuals to come soon), 2013 Chinese Valentine's Day, despite turning out to be softer than expected, looks to have set a record for the festival.

While it is no match to this year's Valentine's Day (2.14, 192M) and May Day (5.1, 185M), it did beat Ching Ming Festivel (4.4, around 100M) and Dragon Boat Festivel (6.10, 85M). It is also a big improvement from the  CVD of 2012, which totaled 91M on a Thursday. 2011 CVD though was bigger due to being the first Saturday of final Harry Potter and third Saturday of TF3.

To be fair, 2012 CVD was wasted with only one major new release Holding Love, which opened to 23M on that day. This year though, we had four major local releases aiming for the slot, while Hollywood blockbuster Pacific Rim still being strong.

As a non-official holiday and a traditional festivel, Chinese Valentine's Day or Qixi (always falls in August), like Valentine's Day (2.14, usually the biggest box office day of the year)/Women's Day (3.8)/Children's Day (6.1)/Singles' Day (11.11)/Christmas Day, has been an important film slot, just like those longer and official holidays like New Year holiday (around Jan 1, 3 days)/Chinese New Year holiday (somewhere in Feb, 7 days)/QingMing holiday (around Apr 5, 3 days)/ Labor/May Day holiday (around May 1, 3 days)/Dragon Boat Festival (somewhere in June, 3 days)/Mid-autumn festival (somewhere in Sep or Early Oct, 3 days)/National Day Holiday (around Oct 1, 7 days). Plus summer (6,7,8) and Winter (12,1,2), the market are driving by those days and sessions.

Biggest days of summer 2013 [over 90M]:

8.13 113~122M Tuesday (CVD, powered by PR/TT2/others)
6.29 120M Saturday (Powered by Tiny Times first Sat with 72M and MoS 2nd Sat with 24M)
8.3 118M Saturday (Powered by PR first Sat with 70M and FF6 2nd Sat with 22M)
6.30 105M Sunday (Powered by TT first Sunday)
8.4 104M Sunday
8.10 102M Saturday(Powered by PR 2nd Sat 36M and TT2 first Sat 37M)
7.27 98M (FF6 first Sat 66M)
8.11 94M (Powered by PR 2nd Sun 33M and TT2 first Sun 30M)
6.22 91M Saturday (MoS first Sat 50M)
6.27 Thursday 95M (TT OD 68M exluding previews)
6.28 91M Friday (TT first Friday)

This past Monday (8.12) did 56M. Cheap Tuesdays usually jump 10% from Mon without new release. So it is a 100%+ boost being the CVD this Tuesday.

Overally June totaled 1.78B yuan with a 59.3M average daily gross while July took 1.67B yuan with 53.87M ave.

Summer 2013 will set new record for June, July and Aug., but overally it is weak. Last summer did 4.16B. This summer looks to do 4.7B or so with 19 days to go, just a modest increase.

Since CVD is done, plus no giant new releases, the daily business will remain smooth for the rest. The next day that will come close to 100M will be the Mid-autumn festival, which will fall on Sep 19th.

Tuesday rough report:

1. PR ------ 31.5M ------ 541M (+81% from Monday)

2. TT2 ------28M ------ 215M (+43% from Monday)

3. ONS ------ 24.5M ------ 82M (+113% from Monday)

4. Palace, The ------ 15.5M ------ NEW

5. Unbeatable ------ 6.1M ------ Preview

6. FF6 ------ 3.4M ------ 398M

Of course all movies benifited from Tuesday being this year's CVD while PR and ONS are the biggest winners, jumping 81% and 113% from previous day respectively. Wanda's TV show adapted costumed rom-com The Palace is a DOA. Giant screen count from Wandan Cinemas couldnt save it.

Overally this year's CVD looks to totall around 114M yuan, which is softer than expected but still is easily one of the biggest days of this summer and about 25% bigger than the same day of last year. More later.

That is HUGE!!!!

What wed drop are we looking at???

For PR

Dude, are you sure about PR's number there?

541M yuan is equivalent to $90M !!

FF6 is pretty damn good too...

I am not sure about that PR number. That's why it's "rough report". 541M is $87M, not $90M. And FF6 is not doing that good. It was supposed to fly past MoS, not struggle. [Keep in mind that FF6 OS is 50% bigger than MoS]
