Does Maleficent open today or yesterday?

20m OW in China only  = 40m total? Are legs that sucky?

Opening tomorrow.

Normally, 20M OW will put it 50-55M, but TF4 next week will kill it.

Its usually a matter of screens

But it does not seem impossible for movies to co-exist. The Monkey King and Dad, Where Are We Going? were released at the same time and both had massive grosses. I understand that TF4 will be even bigger, but at least some room for other movies should be left.

Those are Chinese movies though. They probably kick the Hollywood movies out so quick to protect their own movie industry.

Mentioned it before. It's not just TF4 opening next Friday. Local comedy The Breakup Guru also opens. The distributor are expecting thrasonical 800m out of it. It wont happen but 300m should not be too big a problem.

It is expected that all holdovers will basically disappear from theaters except Maleficent next Friday with the arrival of TF4 and TBG.

Nope. It's all up to theater managers. The authorities only care about release shedule. But when it comes to show/screen count, it's pure theaters conducting.

To sum up how big Transformers are in China. When TF3 opened in 2011, probably over half theaters gave all their screens to it on OW to meet the demands. Over 1/3 of the nation's screens screened the film on opening midnight. For comparison, usual blockbuster DOFP only had less than 1/15.

Sure there are much more screens right now but there are also more audience. I see theaters are putting up 3am and even 5am midnight shows for TF4, which perhaps only has happened twice: TF3 and Titanic 3D.
