RichWS
1/8: Zero Dark Thirty - A- 2/11: Side Effects - B- (bumped it up from C+) 2/15: A Good Day to Die Hard - Fuck you 3/5: Stoker - A- 3/15: Spring Breakers - A- 3/24: Gimme the Loot - B+ 3/28: Olympus Has Fallen - C- Seeing Place Beyond the Pines this week. I was checking my ticket stubs recently, and realized I didn't see my first film in theaters last year until April 20th when I did Cabin in the Woods and The Raid back-to-back in different theaters (they're only five blocks apart). I'm probably going to be up to ten or eleven films by the 20th this year. I'm on a roll, baby!
Jake Gittes
Life of Pi, Anna Karenina, Django, Me and You, Side Effects, No, Maniac and Samsara. Plus our local cinema was showing 1920's German silent films accompanied by live music for three days, and I managed to catch Der Golem and Metropolis, both for the first time. RichWS
I was gonna catch the director's cut of Heaven's Gate last week but it's tough to put 3 1/2 hours aside.

Jake Gittes
How was Maniac? Wood was effective but one-note (he basically plays a version of his Sin City character, one that talks more and is more on edge), and the killings were fairly bloody with a couple of genuinely disturbing moments. Not much suspense, though, and zero psychological complexity - it's mostly just a guy killing women because of mommy issues, until he meets a hot blonde girl with a French accent, befriends her and finally starts struggling with himself, but it's still not very interesting to watch, and I looked at my watch more than once. It's very nicely shot, though - imagine a grimy, grainy, sleazy, sweaty, in-your-face low-budget 1980s grindhouse slasher (that's basically what the original Maniac is) redone, visually, as very clean, cold, polished and distant. The combination of nighttime visuals and an electronic soundtrack (which might be the best part of the movie) neatly and almost deliberately evoked DRIVE sometimes. Overall, I thought it was pretty mediocre, and worse than the original (which kept my attention better thanks to its mood, and Joe Spinell's more interesting performance in the lead), but it's worth a watch if you're a slasher fan.
