RichWS
First list of the summer. The trailers are coming out, the festivals are a month away. Almost that time... American Hustle August: Osage County Captain Phillips Fruitvale Station Gravity The Monuments Men Saving Mr. Banks The Secret Life of Walter Mitty 12 Years a Slave The Wolf of Wall Street On the outside are Rush, Inside Llewyn Davis, and Blue Jasmine. Sims
So far this year seems harder to predict than last. I think I called 6 or 7 of the 2012 BP nominees by this time last year. There are a lot more question marks this year.

Jake Gittes
It does have a small chance. It's silly to make declarative statements like "it's locked" or "it has no chance" when we're still five months away from the year's end and most presumed contenders haven't yet been screened to anyone.
Leyla
I was a bit underwhelmed by BM but it would be totally awesome if it did get nominated Edited August 2, 2013 by Leyla

riczhang
I'm sorry, it has no chance. It has a very good chance. You're forgetting the 5/1 voting rule. Passion >>>>>>>>> Widespread exposure and love
Cmasterclay
People said the same thing about the Master and Moonrise Kingdom last year, but BM is indeed a better movie than both of those.
pieman
It has a very good chance. You're forgetting the 5/1 voting rule. Passion >>>>>>>>> Widespread exposure and love There just isn't a space for it. There are too many much higher profile films competing for nominations. riczhang
There just isn't a space for it. There are too many much higher profile films competing for nominations. There is most definitely space for it. Before Midnight is a passion film, and I wouldn't be surprised if it pulled an Amour on nomination morning. It just needs all of 200 votes, ~50-70 in Directors, and not too much more in the writers. The figures, once broke down, are wholly achievable. And also, most of the high profile films are sight unseen. high profile =/= good. Edited August 2, 2013 by riczhang

Ezen Baklattan
Some thoughts/questions: --Any chance for 'Her' to get nominated here? Spike Jonze's next project has quite an impressive cast, but the odd premise (a man falling for an operating system) might turn off some. --The Butler getting in depends on its box office and connection with audiences. Even if it doesn't get great review, the Academy might not ignore it if it turns into a sleeper hit. The Weinstein Company knows how to pimp their movies. --There always seems to be some summer indie movie that gets in here, ever since the new lineup, sometimes more than one. The pool is definitely Before Midnight, Fruitvale Station, and Blue Jasmine. Current Predictions: AMERICAN HUSTLE AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY BLUE JASMINE THE COUNSELOR GRAVITY INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS MONUMENTS MEN RUSH THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY TWELVE YEARS A SLAVE I have a good feeling about The Counselor, especially with Cormac McCarthy writing, and I think the acadmey will respond nicely if Ridley Scott turns out another great film again, kind of like they did with Woody Allen for Midnight in Paris. Jake Gittes
Great call on HER. Nothing about its Oscar chances will be apparent until we hear some early word, but Jonze's prior history with the Academy (three nominations, including Best Director, for BEING JOHN MALKOVICH, four nominations for ADAPTATION.) definitely suggests it could be a dark horse.
