There just isn't a space for it. There are too many much higher profile films competing for nominations.

There is most definitely space for it. Before Midnight is a passion film, and I wouldn't be surprised if it pulled an Amour on nomination morning. It just needs all of 200 votes, ~50-70 in Directors, and not too much more in the writers. The figures, once broke down, are wholly achievable.

And also, most of the high profile films are sight unseen. high profile =/= good.

Some thoughts/questions:

--Any chance for 'Her' to get nominated here? Spike Jonze's next project has quite an impressive cast, but the odd premise (a man falling for an operating system) might turn off some.

--The Butler getting in depends on its box office and connection with audiences. Even if it doesn't get great review, the Academy might not ignore it if it turns into a sleeper hit. The Weinstein Company knows how to pimp their movies.

--There always seems to be some summer indie movie that gets in here, ever since the new lineup, sometimes more than one. The pool is definitely Before Midnight, Fruitvale Station, and Blue Jasmine.

Current Predictions:

AMERICAN HUSTLE

AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY

BLUE JASMINE

THE COUNSELOR

GRAVITY

INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS

MONUMENTS MEN

RUSH

THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY

TWELVE YEARS A SLAVE

I have a good feeling about The Counselor, especially with Cormac McCarthy writing, and I think the acadmey will respond nicely if Ridley Scott turns out another great film again, kind of like they did with Woody Allen for Midnight in Paris.

Great call on HER. Nothing about its Oscar chances will be apparent until we hear some early word, but Jonze's prior history with the Academy (three nominations, including Best Director, for BEING JOHN MALKOVICH, four nominations for ADAPTATION.) definitely suggests it could be a dark horse.

While high profile might not = good, it often = nominations. The campaigns have the money behind them.

There always will be plenty of high profile duds. Don't you worry. It's just the nature of things. Not all of them turn out right.
