Much better walk-ins for Finding Dory.

Finding Dory walk-ins: 9,500 this Sunday vs. 11,900 last Sunday
Cold War 2 walk-ins: 14,100 this Sunday vs. 23,000 last Sunday

You can see that Finding Dory has closed the gap in walk-ins from 11,000 admissions last Sunday to less than 5,000 today. Cold War 2 actually had better walk-ins today than the rest of the weekend. Poor increase for Ghostbusters. It is playing like a family friendly film but only posted a 1% increase today. Star Trek 3 held up decently considering action films are usually the films to decrease on a Sunday. Central Intelligence didn't falter as much as Me Before You and that will be enough to land it inside the top 5. The Secret Life of Pets had another very solid hold.

Projected grosses after 7/24:
Finding Dory - $4,639,497 in 11 days
Cold War 2 - $7,423,196 in 17 days
Ghostbusters - $734,587 (opening weekend projection)
Star Trek 3 - $644,374 (opening weekend projection)

I still feel Ghostbusters is being overestimated while Star Trek 3 is being underestimated.

Some Broadway/AMC have added more showtimes for Finding Dory this week but the damage has already been done. Broadway/AMC theaters will likely remove Finding Dory showtimes for Ice Age 5/Jason Bourne and Cold War 2 showings.

Good hold for Finding Dory. Cold War 2 has faded. This is the first time that Finding Dory has beaten Cold War 2 by over 1,100 admissions. Surprisingly, Cold War 2 fell harder than Finding Dory on Monday which speaks to the rate that it is falling. It will still comfortably pass You Are the Apple of My Eye for the biggest Chinese language film of all time and 8m though. Finding Dory will need to pull out all the stops soon if it wants to keep its screens before Suicide Squad takes over next Thursday. Ghostbusters isn't really pulling away from Star Trek 3 but Star Trek 3 isn't taking charge. Central Intelligence declined significantly with admissions heading elsewhere.

Early Thursday schedules

These schedules will change with League of Gods premiering on Friday.

Broadway/AMC: Cold War 2 is still on full day showtimes or 2 screens. Jason Bourne is either on the biggest screen or 2nd. Ice Age 5 is on the biggest or 3rd biggest screen. Theaters are split on Finding Dory. Half of the theaters so far upgraded Finding Dory to the biggest screen with almost full day showtimes but the other half has downsized to 1-3 showtimes. The theaters that have downsized Finding Dory have gifted Finding Dory's Wednesday screen to Ice Age 5.

MCL: Ice Age 5 is getting the biggest screen at most places and it will split the biggest screen with Jason Bourne. Support for the two openers is strong here. Finding Dory is given a reprieve with 5-6 showtimes available on Thursday. Cold War 2 has seen its showtimes slashed to 1-3 only.

Golden Harvest: Ice Age 5 nabs the biggest screen here while Jason Bourne pops onto the scene with the 3rd biggest screen. Finding Dory is left with the 2nd biggest screen with about 5-7 showtimes. Cold War 2 is given only half day showtimes.

UA is not playing around. They are going around with a combination of Jason Bourne, Ice Age 5 and If Cats Disappeared From the World. Star Trek Beyond is the fourth wheel here.

Holdovers:
Ghostbusters: 2-4 showtimes
Finding Dory: 2-4 showtimes
Cold War 2: 1-3 showtimes
Central Intelligence/Me Before You: Almost gone
Secret Life of Pets: Gone

All films from last Tuesday's top 10 fell more than 50% today. Finding Dory performed the best of any film from last week and today's top 10 with a drop of 51%. Mediocre hold for Cold War 2. Ghostbusters/Star Trek 3 continues its close battle. There's no discernible trend between the two yet. Me Before You scrapes past Central Intelligence for #5 by 2 admissions.

Expected top 4 this weekend
1. Jason Bourne
2. Ice Age 5/Finding Dory
3. Finding Dory/Ice Age 5
4. Cold War 2

Interestingly, Jason Bourne is showing in 3D at select locations. Ice Age 5 might be looking at a disappointing opening weekend but it has the edge in showtimes and screens. Finding Dory has looked the best out of any film at a number of locations but the low showtimes count will hurt it. It might be able to pass Ice Age 5 for #2. Cold War 2 is on its last legs but will pass 8m by the end of this weekend.

With League of Gods premiering on Friday, holdovers will get slashed once again. Cold War 2 will leave some UA theaters on Thursday. Finding Dory loses the 8 PM showtime that it had on Thursday at Broadway/AMC. Other holdovers loses 1 or 2 showtimes at other theater chains.

It's kind of an eh weekend and it's being reflected in the pre-sales. Jason Bourne is #1 and it will continue to build on its lead with final numbers. Is it a particular good opening day? Not really. People are waiting for Suicide Squad. Ice Age 5 is not doing well. It's -42% below Ice Age 4's opening day 3D Cantonese and Cantonese versions only (all versions including English and 3D English were separate entries at that time). Star Trek 3 is being inflated by IMAX. In reality, it has fallen over 60% from last Thursday's pre-sales. Finding Dory has hammered by Ice Age 5 and the lack of showtimes. Ghostbusters had an OK hold. Cold War 2 crumbled.

4 PM Update: Jason Bourne and Ice Age 5 have pulled away from the rest of the films. Jason Bourne so far has reigned in a 4.0 from users but Ice Age 5 has started off with a stellar 4.8/5 from moviegoers. Time will tell if this word of mouth will bring in more viewers for Ice Age 5 and whether it affects Finding Dory this weekend. Finding Dory is entrenched at #3 while Star Trek 3 still leads over Cold War 2 in admissions for #4.

Good for Jason Bourne. Very disappointing number for Ice Age 5. It is down -50.2% in admissions from Ice Age 4's opening day (without previews included). Now it has to rely on its word of mouth to turn things around. OK for Finding Dory. Iffy for Cold War 2. Average for Star Trek 3.

Decent increase for Jason Bourne. Weak increase for Ice Age 5. Not that great for Star Trek 3 or Finding Dory. Solid gain for Cold War 2 on Friday.

Pokemon Go is a huge hit in HK after being released earlier this week. Unforunately, that hasn't extended into movies as Jason Bourne is doing about 1.5 screens worth of business and Ice Age 5 about 1 plus holdovers are losing about 50-60% from last week.

Good for Jason Bourne. It will become the highest grossing Bourne movie in 5 days. Jason Bourne has moved up to a 4.1/5. Ice Age 5 on the other hand is doing very poorly. Each Ice Age movie has surpassed the previous one in gross but this time it might not even make half of the fourth one. This might miss 1m OW as well so the drop off this time around has been huge. Word of mouth continues to be excellent with a 4.6 through 2 days but how families view this film will be key. Finding Dory had another average hold. It has to make as much money as it can before Suicide Squad opens. 7m looks at risk. Cold War 2 has passed Ip Man 3 to become the #3 local film of all time and the #4 Chinese language film of all time. Cold War 2 will topple You Are the Apple of My Eye's gross on Saturday. Ghostbusters had a weak hold and Star Trek 3 died. It might not even pass Star Trek's total.

Good start for Jason Bourne. It will take over as the reigning OW champion in the franchise and it will pass the highest grossing Bourne movie on Monday or Tuesday. Ice Age 5 bombed. Although it was not expected to match previous films' OW heights, it still should have done over 1m. Animation is really not doing that well this summer. Even The Secret Life of Pets which took down the highest original animated OW from Inside Out has struggled to pass a 2 multiplier and 4m is not happening. Ice Age 5 will finish as either the 2nd or 3rd lowest grossing film in the series and it will be dependent on whether it bests Ice Age 2's 1.945m gross. Finding Dory had an OK hold. It did face Ice Age 5 so competition was bit more direct but its 7m chances look extremely low unless if it has a string of excellent holds the next few weeks. It's not impossible if Ice Age 5 keeps imploding and Suicide Squad disappoints slightly. 6m will happen on Thursday or Friday. Cold War 2 surpasses You Are The Apple of My Eye's gross to stand as the biggest Chinese language film of all time. In addition, it already holds the biggest local movie of all time defeating Kung Fu Hustle's gross. 8.5m could still be a possibility depending on how Broadway/AMC schedule it with Suicide Squad releasing next week. Ghostbusters had a bad hold and it will finish with around 1.7m.

A typhoon will directly hit Hong Kong on Tuesday with howling winds and squally rain expected. T1 will be issued tonight at the earliest. It is unknown how this affects ticket sales on Tuesday. In past years, a typhoon that wasn't a direct hit but still necessitated a No. 8 signal increased ticket sales significantly on that day essentially making it an extra holiday. A direct hit, however, could see ticket sales drop on Tuesday possibly as transportation won't be running.
