  1. Sometimes for work I have to tell people who have done something wrong that the behavior of others doesn't excuse their own. It doesn't matter, in the end, what the standard practice is. Disney has a chance to lead by example and put in more body variety to their characters. As of yet, they haven't, and they can be criticized for it. It is also true that OTHER studios can be criticized for the same. (And body image issues hit women and girls far more than men and boys, so Disney's consistently thin princesses is a bigger problem than another studio's consistently thin dudes.)
  2. Oh, there are problems with the way Disney has designed their characters. Glen Keane is a great character designer, but they have tended to hew a bit too close to his template of late. I love Frozen, but I really wish they'd gone a bit further than their standard thin girl archetype for both Elsa and Anna. (Personal choice: make Anna chubby. Don't change anything else about the film's presentation of her, and never have it addressed, but it would be good for representation.) However, the problems that Disney has are completely different than the problems that Marvel and DC tend to have with their comics. There are some artists who are good about drawing teen girls, and then there are artists who have them with arched backs and breasts like balloons. It's really good we won't see anything like the latter in BH6.
  3. Yeah, I walked out of the theater and thought it was Singer essentially saying "No, THIS is how you direct a superhero film" to the MCU. Regardless of my feelings about the allegations against him, he can deliver the goods.
  4. Rather, Disney will actually make the characters look their age, rather than overly sexualizing the female characters?
  5. I know I posted this in another thread, but my ranking goes something like this: 5 - I love this film. There is something about it that really connects to me. 4 - I really like this film. It's extremely well done, but doesn't quite have the emotional connection. 3 - I like this film. It's got enough to enjoy about it, but there could be some problems. The vast majority of films will get this grade. 2 - I generally didn't like this film. It probably has a large number of problems that took me out of the viewing experience. 1 - I hated this film. It's bad enough to make me want to stop watching.
  6. You want to provide options for more people, even if it's less than capacity. It's not going to double the gross, or probably even add 50%, but at 8pm, this probably could have cracked 10m, which does change the story the next day, even if it doesn't make a large difference in the end.
  7. It can make a large difference, because the theaters can get in an extra showing. The theater I went to had, I think, four showings: 10pm, 11pm, midnight, and 1am, which would take up three screens (the 10pm and 1am shows were on the same screen.) If you allow them to get showings started at 8pm, you allow two extra showings with the same setup (8pm leads to the 11pm show, and 9pm, leads to the midnight show.) 7pm would add another showing on top of that. (And then you double the number of screens required if you're doing both 2D and 3D.)
  8. Until we start to see it experience any sort of consistent drop, who knows? 50/50? The way it's been trending, Frozen may very well just earn 10m a week from here on out until the heat death of the universe.
  9. A couple years ago the AMC theater in my hometown did that retrofit of all their seats. I think the first film I saw there with them was Tintin. It almost overnight became the destination theater for the whole area, and really severely hurt the Regal theater around there. After I'd "discovered" the change, I told my friends and we all went to see a film. I think we were aiming to see Haywire, but literally every showing for every film was sold out, so we ended up buying the final tickets available to see The Grey instead. More recently, they've done assigned seating, which is nice. I think I calculated that they probably halved their available seats for any given theater, but since they probably fill to capacity on a regular basis now, and didn't before, it's probably a net gain in business.
  10. Yeah. The US release is still November. It looks like it'll have a much more spread out release pattern than Frozen did. Here's what's listed on IMDB so far: USA 7 November 2014 Argentina 4 December 2014 Thailand 4 December 2014 Japan 20 December 2014 New Zealand 25 December 2014 Australia 26 December 2014 Brazil 2 January 2015 Sweden 30 January 2015 Denmark 5 February 2015 France 11 February 2015 Netherlands 11 February 2015 UK 13 February 2015
  11. The difference between Tangled and WiR is pretty negligible, and could possibly be chalked up to released date. (For DOM, at least. WW is another matter.) Frozen's a level above those, and then some, which is part of the reason BH6 could do very well. It's the followup to a sensation, and while nobody expects it to achieve the same heights, it should receive some benefit because of the association. (Some lesser benefit may happen from the Marvel association, but only if they choose to exercise it. That doesn't seem to be the case so far.) Beating HTTYD2 isn't likely to happen. If it does, it's probably because HTTYD2 underperformed relative to expectations rather than this doing so much better. But still, hitting somewhere between Frozen and WiR/Tangled seems likely.
  12. There have been several weekends with two films that have each earned 200m. None yet where both have hit 300m or even 250m. I hope that this weekend is the first.
  13. I really like the BH6 teaser poster. I wonder if I can get a hole of one somehow.

  15. Every Wednesday is ladies day. And I think the first of each month is a national discount day. Then each chain has their own discount days (such as the 14th of each month for Toho). And various other one-off days may provide discounts.
  16. Heh, yeah. I wonder how many people commenting actually went and read it. It's fascinating, and deserving of a read. Not just for the Cruise information, but also as an examination of how celebrity culture has changed in the past decade. (It is a bit odd that there's no mention of ONTD, even though I think it predated Perez Hilton as a celebrity news blogging site. Although he might have spiked the popularity.)
  17. It wasn't the first time Frozen lost the top spot in video sales. When Hobbit 2 was released, it took over for one weekend. (I think it was Frozen's third in release.) Still, the fact it remained on top this far into May is really stunning.
  18. So, uh. I posted the teaser video on my Tumblr, and it is going crazy. I wonder if I was accidentally the first person who posted it there.
  19. In retrospect, after seeing the film, I appreciate the Frozen teaser a lot more now. At the time it bugged me, because it seemed to indicate the movie would rely heavily on comic relief. Because of that, I'm much less apprehensive about the advertising for this, regardless of the form it takes.
  20. Most of those were negligible in terms of growth. I did say if it does increase, it'll be almost entirely due to China, not completely.
  21. That's what I meant. In terms of quality, WDAS passed Pixar several years ago.
