  1. Maybe initially there is some effect but in the grand scheme of things I wouldn't say shorter movies really benefit given that most of the top grossers (Avatar, Titantic, LOTR) all had super-long run-times.
  2. Welcome to the forums I can't speak much to Japanese movie trends since I'm not really familiar with these franchises but I agree that the recent upswing in theatrical attendance is very interesting given the stagnant state of the manga.
  3. The order is pretty terrible and the overall selection is only passable imo. Shrek, Shrek 2, Hercules, Mulan and The Prince of Egypt don't even make the top 100? That's just ridiculous especially when films like Kung Fu Panda and the 70s LOTR made the cut...
  4. I could be wrong but aren't Shakespeare's works public domain now? I doubt there was any sort of legal repercussions possible for a 16th century play influencing a motion picture and maybe Disney wanted to avoid the general perception that it was an adaptation for the casual viewer. Frozen isn't original either but the setting and some characters more closely mirror the more recent source material so it would have been difficult to shed the association even if the plot was almost completely different. That'd be my guess at any rate.
  5. At a certain point it becomes semantics on what constitutes an "orignal" work. The Lion King was loosely based on Hamlet for example and followed that story line more closely than Frozen followed the Snow Queen's plot.
  6. You may be sick of hearing this, but I think I can safely say that most people here (at least on the two Frozen threads) would much rather underpredict by a wide margin and be pleasantly surprised when it does well rather than be disappointed that a movie that they love failed to live up to their bold box office expectations. I would put more stock in a logical analysis of a movie like this if I had no dog in the fight so to speak but as it is I'm fine grossly missing the mark in my Frozen prediction. You have said that you have no personal opinion on the film itself so it would make sense for you to have perhaps the most realistic look at things, and I for one couldn't care less if I "sling shit" and wind up being proven dead wrong in this particular instance beacuse I just want to see Frozen do as well as possible. This is a box office forum but in most cases there are no prizes that go to the closest estimation so for me at least it's more about enjoying the tracking of the movie I like but you clearly strive for the best guess and if that's what you care about then more power to you. Obviously your generous predictions have been much more accurate than most to this point and many Frozenites are perfectly happy to concede
  7. I'm all for Hunchback getting some credit since it always seems to be overlooked. Some scenes are rather dark for a kid's movie (especially "Hellfire" ) but damn is it powerful. That said I completely disagree about your assessment of Hercules. It's one of my favorites but even if it wasn't and I did think it was the worst of that decade I still wouldn't call it crap. The great thing about this topic for me is that it isn't about choosing a bad movie more than it is determining which entry is the weakest relative to an incredibly strong field of contenders. For example Pocahontas is clearly last in my book but it still had a good soundtrack imo and overall it still isn't bad.
  8. Hey it looks like a masterpiece compared to the lord of the rings cartoon they released shortly thereafter.
  9. Better than the new Trilogy (so far at least) and cost about half a billion less to make. Now that's what I call a bargain
  10. Tommen is by far the most sweet and genuinely innocent character in the series, too bad he had a sadist for a big brother and a controlling, power-hungry bitch of a mother.
  11. I'm excited to go home and re-watch, I'm always missing some little details the first viewing.
  12. I can't believe all of this hate for Hercules! James Woods is amazing as Hades as is Danny Devito as Philotetes and the story, while not accurate to the Greek myth, is still one of Disney's strongest. Some of the songs are meh but Go the Distance and I Won't Say I'm in Love are both really good. The only reason it's not near the top of this era is because of the sheer strength of the field and BatB and TLK are some of if not, the, greatest animations ever but Hercules still cracks my top 5. Definitely better than Pocahontas that's for sure.
  13. Awesome! It sounded like the biggest potential issue in the coming weeks for Frozen's sustained success was going to be keeping screens but this certainly helps with that
  14. They did at least make him a bad ass in the show's version of Blackwater. First man on the ladder to take King's Landing and he was wrecking those City Watch guys once he made it on the wall. But yeah as a whole HBO has basically made it seem like Stannis is just Melisandre's puppet and while she does exert a good amount of influence on him in the the books he is still clearly the one wearing the pants in the relationship.
  15. I'm not denying PJ did a helluva job with the original trilogy but for the hobbit as a stand alone children's book (which was intended as a comparatively simpler tale to that of LOTR) is far superior to the bloated CGI mess he has made with this current trilogy. imo for the universe of Middle-Earth it goes: LOTR (films) > Silmarillion (book) > Hobbit (book) > LOTR (books) >>>>>> Hobbit (films)
  16. "Where'd you get the pistol?" "At the gettin' place" Man I love that movie
  17. The Dark World wasn't as good as The Winter Soldier but I still found it to be entertaining.
  18. Go figure. Well Da Vinci has its moments I suppose and anything with Sir Ian Mckellan in it can't be all bad so I'll retract the train-wreck statement But still for me I much prefer A&Ds although I also thought that the book was far superior so maybe it's just the overall story I enjoyed more rather than the actual execution of the film adaptation.
  19. "smells like a dead cat" "I don't know if I've ever smelled a dead cat" "well they smell like Pycelle"
  20. Sad to say but I much prefer Catching Fire over either Hobbit movie. Why did PJ have to screw up the book so much!
  21. Season 3 was probably my favorite so far even with having the most deviations from the book.
