  2. Because it would be rather embarrassing for a movie with both of DC's flagship characters to finish behind one of Marvel's joke characters.
  3. For perspective on Japan, there are typically around 5 movies a year (±2) that make over 5 billion yen ($45M at current exchange rates). 10 billion yen movies ($90M) don't come along every year - there have been 6 since 2010. It's naive to think of any movie as having that sort of success locked.
  4. Everybody's heard the names, and has some idea what they do. That doesn't mean they care about them, which is what matters in making them a box office draw. How many people cared about Thor, or Captain America, or even Iron Man, before Marvel put out their individual movies?
  5. So far, past the first couple of days, BvS has been tracking very close to Furious 7. Today's number should be quite informative.
  6. Here's a complete list of $50M+ movies such that no movie with a bigger opening had a worse multiplier: TFA: 247M/3.77x JW: 208M/3.13x TA: 207M/3.00x AoU: 191M/2.40x IM3: 174M/2.35x DH2: 169M/2.25x SM3: 151M/2.23x T:NM: 142M/2.07x T:BD2: 141M/2.07x T:BD1: 138M/2.04x 50SoG: 85M/1.93x
  7. For animated movies, Easter Monday in the US is typically about halfway between weekday and weekend numbers. So, not a holiday, but considerably stronger than usual, even when you take Spring Break into account.
  8. Looks like Zootopia had a fairly normal-shaped Easter weekend.
  9. Yes. That's why Zootopia's fourth Monday was 1.04x its first, compared to Frozen's 2.89x. It'll get there even if it has 47% week-to-week drops from here out. 48% would have it fall just short.
  10. Not unprecedented. Tangled and Frozen both did it, and for a very similar reason - lots of kids out of school yesterday who were in school on the first Monday.

  13. I'm not sure whether it is for movies in general, but it definitely affects animated movies.
  14. One movie released in (a few) theaters this weekend that I think is worthy of mention, even though its gross is $0: the Navajo dub of Finding Nemo (shown for free on and around the Navajo Nation).
  15. The direct comparison here is Rango, which on Monday, March 14, 2011 (its 11th day of release) had a drop of 67.4% putting it slightly above its first Monday. On Friday, March 18, it went up by 106.5%. On Monday, March 14, 2016 (its 11th day of release), Zootopia had a drop of 72.2% putting it slightly above its first Monday. I predict a Friday increase around 100-110%.

  17. In general, a movie will get halfway to its final gross sometime on the second weekend. This means Zootopia will need to have exceptional legs to end with more than about $286M.
  18. Here's how it's tracking so far compared to most major March animated films:
  19. A matter which is never mentioned or even hinted at in the movie. If that's what you saw, you need to watch again, and pay attention to what's actually on the screen rather than what's in your head.
  20. At the current exchange rate, $150M is ¥16.9B, which would make it the #9 movie of all time. Unlikely.
  21. Large March animated movies (>100M gross) have multipliers ranging from 2.87 (Ice Age: The Meltdown) to 4.97 (HTTYD). 5 out of 11 have 3.44 or higher.
