Saw the trailer for this with Dory. It would have looked bad any year, but this year in particular it's going to suffer from endlessly being compared with Zootopia.

It's been a year of feast and famine. Will we ever get a movie that ends up over $160M, and under $320M? The final graph for 2015 is in the first post. -
The hits this year have been coming like clockwork. Here are the top 7 movies so far: Deadpool was followed 3 weeks later by Zootopia, which was followed 3 weeks later by Batman v Superman, which was followed 3 weeks later by The Jungle Book, which was followed 3 weeks later by Civil War, which was followed 3 weeks later by X-Men Apocalypse, which was followed 3 weeks later by Finding Dory. This may bode well for Pets.

It will be soon. The current record is 3 - a tie between last year's Disney, last year's Universal, and this year's Disney.

I've been crunching some numbers based on previous Pixar movies. Every last one of them has taken at least 7.5 days to reach half its final gross, most have taken over 8.5, and a few have taken much longer. That, combined with conservative predictions for Dory's next few days, gives a floor of $450M. $500M is quite likely. I'll take the bet.

Due to a Toho site update yesterday, the program they use to collect data on screenings and sales is no longer working properly. They already had the data for yesterday and today, but starting tomorrow, it will be unavailable. They expect to have it working again by Saturday.

Dory might have an effect. Pokemon, not so much. The old established franchises tend to coexist with other movies, rather than competing with them. Add in the decline of Pokemon over the years, and it won't be significant.

There's no "almost" about it. We are living in a golden age of animation. I don't think there have ever been so many studios putting out so many high-quality films. Every movie will be a must-see event. Every movie will be special. And when every movie's special, no movie will be.
