4 billion yen for 'Inside Out' is fine. It's not nearly as far from 'Minions' as it is in many other markets. It will probably just scrape the yearly top 10 (December to November) which is pretty good.

With such grosses it's no wonder we keep getting sequel after sequel. If 'The Lion King' were to be released today it would probably perform averagely compared to 'Minions 2' or 'Toy Story 4'. It's my impression that crowds have gotten increasingly risk averse when it comes to cinema going. 1994 top 5 : The Lion King, Forrest Gump, True Lies, The Mask and Speed. 2015 top 5 : Jurassic World, Furious 7, Age of Ultron, Minions and Inside Out (with SWVII likely pushing it out).

Frozen was around the middle at $1 = 100 yen so it didn't get screwed but it didn't benefit from a high yen either. Still, It grossed less than Spirited Away in yen but more in dollars so it's hard to say it got screwed.

MH is now ahead in domestic currency. In recent weeks a dollar has gone from about 6.21 yuan to 6.37 yuan as the Chinese government tries to lower the value of its currency to boost exports. This means more yuans are required for a similar dollar gross.

Can't see it happening for a few years. China first needs to get more leverage by having a bigger box office market. Once its total box office becomes say twice as big as domestic, then they'll have insane power in terms of negociations.
