  1. Really shows how no film today is even half the success Titanic was, except maybe Avatar.
  2. Records are facts but they can be more or less meaningful. For example no one would take the record of the 'highest opening weekend for a movie starting with the letter B and opening on a leap year Good Friday' seriously. Well imo it's simply the same for this WW opening-weekend record, and for several reasons : -Exchange rate variations. -The number of markets on OW varies depending on the movie. -Market expansion : China's growth means this 'record' will keep on falling in upcoming years provided that simultaneous releases become more frequent. I'm not saying the record isn't a record, I'm saying that when combining all this, it makes for a meaningless record.
  3. Great post Quigley. I hate how so many here seem to eat up the records thought up by the studio executives without taking one step back. You'd think that on a box office forum people would know better.
  4. That's true. But a market where Zootopia does more than BvS or TFA isn't that bad.
  5. Well, of course, the market has become 2.5 to 3 times bigger since then. Considering their respective market conditions, it's not actually doing as well as MoS in China.
  6. TFA is well behind Avatar in terms of run, and even further behind Titanic. TFA is a huge blockbuster, no doubt, but Avatar and Titanic are juggernauts of an entire different category (especially Titanic).
  7. I remembered seeing it somewhere a few years ago, had to do some memory digging to find it. I agree with you about the oversaturation of the market with sequels and remakes, I've already said it a few times. I just found it interesting to mention how far the criticism goes back in that regard.
  8. I actually thought WB was pretty fair towards the audience in how they handled HP. Other studios would have probably started doing 2 movies per book as early as book 4 or 5 to get some extra cash out of it all. I thought the DH1 & DH2 product was good enough and managed to come off not looking like something made only to cash in a bit further on the franchise. However, I'm not convinced at all by several movies likely being made out of Fantastic Beats.
  9. I agree. Well, it has the #1 spot of the (at least) last 30 years in admissions anyway.
  10. Is it forbidden to be happy about Titanic keeping the #2 spot ?
  11. Potter is definitely bigger outside of the English-speaking world.
  12. Shows the power of a studio to turn a decent but hardly record-breaking number into a record for PR.
  13. To be fair, with the market growth being what it is, being released in January is quite a disadvantage for the year-end ranking.
  14. You can't just adjust the ER for Avatar to lower the gross but not take into account market growth in China.
  15. It's 'biggest opening saturday ever'. And with the box office growing 50% year-on-year and opening days being kind of all over the place in China, it's really not that meaningful.
  16. Ah Deadline and their ability to find a record anywhere. 'Biggest opening for a 1h45 minute movie opening on a rainy day during the first half of January in a leap year.'
  17. It would indeed. But then Titanic leads by far in admissions anyway.
