  1. Did you see Arabian Nights at Cannes?
  2. Right right right. BFCA, I've never known the URL. Their consensuses seem to be different from US critics and other world critics often. The Assassin is a good example of this.
  3. I love it. Just ahead of Inside Out for me for favorite English language movie of the year. Absolutely genius. That scene where the concert hall floods as Caine and Miss Universe walk on a platform may get into my top ten of all time. Just sublime and surreal.
  4. The reason I think Max has a chance is because Youth and Brookltn are both kind of faltering so it may be FSL's first push. And, it should get a ton of below the line noms and those are all BP voters. The actors night even go for it too because of Theron and Hardy.
  5. Well Stone is a mess... Not as rough as Tapley, but doesn't have a great track record. There will be more passion behind Inside Out than Spotlight and Hateful come Oscar season. You have to realize that Disney will be campaigning for this. Just look at AW: Inside Out has been in their top 6 for months and they are usually pretty good come September. The Martian isn't going to get in because all the reviews seem to call it good not great and it's studio is Fox. They have The Revenant and Joy. Their intentions were never to campaign for awards with this.
  6. I think Inside Out is in. Like top 5.
  7. You are so lucky to be getting The Lobster and Macbeth! I won't get those until 2016 unless they go to AFI.
  8. We are talking about two different types of screenings. This is test screening, which does as I explain. The screenings you are talking about are pretty much the only way I go to movies now. They are free for audiences in the hopes that they can build up hype/still gauge what the audience thinks of it. Sometimes there purpose is to get critics in so their reviews can be published ahead of the theatrical release. These are usually a couple weeks or less leading up to a film. A test screening usually involves signing embargoes and are typically in LA and NYC showing movies months and up to a year or so ahead. Ihave a friend who went to a test screening of Crimson Peak like 9 months ago.
  9. Screenings don't evoke confidence. They do that for everyone movie. In fact, all the screenings it is having means they don't know how to market it or it is still very much a work-in-progress.
  10. Hm. Mine are probably: 1. The Assassin 2. Steve Jobs 3. Bridge of Spies 4. Room (So great. Saw it at TIFF and have a press screening and interview with the director next week.) 5. Truth (Saw it at TIFF. Loved it.) 6. Crimson Peak 7. The Martian 8. Burnt 9. Suffragette I'm see The Walk at a press screening next week. Meh.
  11. Feel free. The only way Damon has a way in is if The Martian gets a BP nod. Why would the give The Martian the populous genre BP nod over Mad Max? That have premiered I'd say: Fassbender and Redmayne. I have Caine, Cranston and Rohrig ahead on my personal ballot. I haven't seen Attah, but he is getting better reviews than Depp even though he likely has no shot. That being said, I think Depp is certainly gunning for a nod whether I like it or not. It is just hard to call anyone but Fassbender a lock. No matter how much I disliked Demolition, I wish they'd move that up to December so Gyllenhaal could get in. He is so good in it and probably is my favorite male performance of the year.
  12. Courtenay has been confirmed supporting. Depp is so not a lock. He is hanging on to that 4th or 5th spot for life. Damon isn't happening. Like not a chance in hell.
  13. I give it a 3/4 which seems consistent with reviews! It is the pundits who are hyping this up because they don't like DOR or Carol. My point was Boyhood's campaign was unique and Spotlight's is consistent with fall releases. The comparison was completely nonsensical and I make it my goal to shut down incorrectness.
  14. The Birdman/Steve Jobs comparison is almost passable. This also is filmed uniquely and will get a lot of tech noms plus 2-3 acting nods. The Boyhood/Spotlight comparison has no backing. Boyhood premiered at Sundance with a July 11th release date and was a front runner for most of the season with universal critical acclaim. Spotlight premiered at Telluride and has a Fall release date primed for award season. It has good reception but certainly not BP winning or best of the decade reception. There is nothing similar about the two. You could compare it to The Theory of Everything, Foxcatcher, The Imitation Game or any fall release over the year before that egregious comparison.
  15. That's great. She should've gotten "Truth" because it is the better journalism movie.
  16. Actually, after watching the trailer I could see this at least be in the conversation for a couple Oscars. This'll close out AFI and barring press screenings are during the weekend, I should be there. I am more excited about By the Sea, though. Concussion will probably get a gal and I am hoping some kind of combination of Joy, The Revenant and Hateful Eight get secret screenings.
