  1. A miniseries and a DOR film that will make >$100 mil domestic are two completely different things. I'm not going to say he'll be a household name but there is no reason to believe it won't elevate him from C-list to B-list.
  2. I know the person tweeting about this. He didn't see the screening of JOY, a friend did. That person isn't necessarily an awards aficionado or a tastemaker. Every single Twitter reaction is hype based on one screening reaction, so let's not get too excited. What we can take from this is that there could be an actor campaigned in all four categories again and if DOR and his actors campaign like they did last time it is possible to see 4 acting nods for this. And "Edgar Ramirez is happening" means he can foresee this kick starting his career, not that he'll be Oscar Winner Edgar Ramirez.
  3. I'm also not confident about Brooklyn or The Danish Girl but can't imagine a work without Hooper going over huge at the Oscars. I'm losing faith in Beasts of No Nations. I'm not sure Netflix can pull it off and it is dark. And there is no way Carol is barely hanging on. I don't believe it.
  4. No joke! I'm very curious about By The Sea and The Big Short to a lesser extent. Concussion will surely play too.
  5. I'm going either way. Have you been to AFI before? There is a serious possibility it is played as a secret screening.
  6. Hoping for an AFI premiere. Sometimes pundit logic is so ridiculous. "DOR's pat three movies have all gotten a ton of award traction. The goodwill us to runout sometime." That's isn't how things work statistically!
  7. Maybe I'm wrong, but those seem more like direction things rather than cinematography no? Watching these clips makes me remember how much I love this movie. Wow.
  8. 2014. 1. Birdman 2. Boyhood 3. The Grand Budapest Hotel 4. Selma 5. Whiplash 6. American Sniper 7. The Theory of Everything 8. The Imitation Game (hugely hate.) 2013 1. American Hustle 2. Her 3. Gravity 4. The Wolf of Wall Street 5. Captain Phillips 6. Dallas Buyers Club
  9. People think SICARIO is going to get shot out but there is in faith in a nom it is Deakins (at least somewhat likely) and Del Toro (not very likely.) The supporting actor race is hard as hell this year and the big ensemble pieces like Spotlight, The Hateful Eight, The Big Short (if it becomes a player) and Joy don't help. PS Joy screened and apparently Edgar Ramirez is co-lead and stellar? I don't know if they'll push him lead so DOR can land a performance in each category again or keep him in supporting but he'd directly compete with their Hardy and De Niro there. We'll see!
  10. What a disaster. The pundits this year are a total mess and the Carol oversight is ridiculous!
  11. Fair. Beltrami was nominated the year before which I think had something to do with it. This year seems to strong for something weird to happen even if things always do. I don't know. Hope I didn't come off attacking.
  12. That sounds so auteur and confident. Ew. I really hate on Inarritu a lot for liking his filmography...
  13. I don't agree with that. Besides, the score is very underdone and all of its tender moments are sold with zero music. The biggest music moment involves "Girls Just Want to Have Fun." I'd say the opposite is true for Desplat and THE DANISH GIRL. The score is incredible smarmy and is hugely tied in with the drama. It is very apparent and quite lovely when listened to alone but with the film it just comes off quite strong. Obviously you are entitled to your opinion, but I don't think that you'll think so after seeing the movie. The score is pretty forgettable, which isn't a bad thing! It just doesn't need overtures and huge string and woodwind sections to elevate the effect.
  14. I've seen ANOMALISA and it isn't getting a score nomination.
  15. I think Desplat could get left out this year.
  16. Really? I thought the cinematography was nice but nothing spectacular. I think Joy looks lovely so far. Woozy, wintery and dreamy looking.
  17. I am saying both. I personally don't find that movies work that way. It just comes off as uneven and lazy. But I sale hi it could work as redemption. I don't know.
  18. Weird. It has a 77 on Metacritic which is pretty damn good. The reviews seemed like they were all overly impressed by the finale which made them forget the generic and bad beforehand. Sort of like Jurassic world: one well place set piece can blind critics/audiences. I see this having great WOM because of this.
  19. Bullock does career best work here, but the film is pretty offensive. Kind of follows the whole "the-white-American-saves-the-day" bullshit we are constantly exposed to. 2.5/4ish is probably what I would give it.
  20. Saw this at TIFF and am interviewing the director on Tuesday!
  21. I will repeat: The Academy doesn't love LGBT films. I mean, Brokeback Mountain was even snubbed.
  22. Do LGBT stories even go well with The Academy?
