  1. With the insanely polarized 2018-2019 season being over (it ended yesterday), I'll do an overall recap as soon as we get a clear picture of where FFH will finish.
  2. MONDAY (29/07) 1. MEN IN BLACK INTERNATIONAL - € 110.277 - 18.407 2. SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME - € 104.932 - 17.396 3. MIDSOMMAR - € 29.464 -4.903 4. SERENITY - € 25.616 - 4.518 5. CATS AND PEACHTOPIA - € 12.499 - 2.468 9. PETS 2 - € 5.974 - 1.139 10. LITTLE - € 4.767 - 880 Monday was the last day in the top 10 for Aladdin. It remained in the chart for 68 consecutive days, one of the highest ever. Spider Man FFH passed Captain Marvel on Tuesday and now stands at 10.393.869 euros. It will pass Aquaman (10.76M) within a week. This upcoming weekend is going to be terribly boring, at least the weekend after we have Hobbs & Shaw.

We should definitely get around a +10% from 2018 once the F&F spinoff opens next week. So far so good. Men in Black avoided the failure thanks to the bad weather and should at least beat Dark Phoenix. I'm staying with a conservative 2.70M total due to the possibility of sun and hot coming back by the weekend. Far From Home dropped relatively hard but it's totally normal in the summer for the bigger grossers to hold worse on rainy weekends as the percentage of casual moviegoers they attract is relatively smaller. What matters is that in absolute terms the hold is very very good and locks up the #2 finish among 2019 superhero movies (behind...guess what! :P) I thought Serenity had a small increase, but it can still be more than satisfied. The same can't be said about The Current War, which for some reasons I can't figure out had by far the worst drop of the top 10. Toy Story 4 locked to at least pass The Grinch (5.8M). Not like it's something it should be happy about. This week: Hotel Artemis (a bit late...), Fighting with my Family and the highly anticipated horror movie Isabelle, starring Adam Brody and his nose(!!). The latter (the movie, not the nose) may come within 99% of Endgame's opening.
  4. ITALIA € 26.338 3.584 Monster increases for Toy Story 4, Cats and Peachtopia and Pets 2. Aladdin was unfortunately limited by the very very little number of showings. Some wonderful weekend holds thanks to the rainy weather: many increases and a 30% drop for Spider Man, which is now guaranteed to beat Aquaman.
  5. Certainly possible. It has a great release date (late August) but it also needs a push from the weather, even half the one Endgame got would be more than enough.
  6. Bodes very well for Italy, considering how similarly the two countries have behaved for the Disney live actions. If everything goes right, it might come close to Endgame here.
  7. 142.8M this weekend, 255M last weekend. -44% (HK's opening included, but the % shouldn't change as actuals will likely put it a little higher).
  8. Not saying 1.67+ isn't possible, but chances are below 20%. It needs pretty much everything to align correctly, breakout in Japan included.
  9. Aaaand I thought it was coming from a 40M OS weekend, while it was 40M WW. Ok. Over TS3 locked. And I need a walk. Too much pc today.
  10. For some reason I totally forgot the movie has yet to open in like 10 European markets, Germany included.
  11. 1.5B is now totally locked. If I'm not mistaken, holidays in Latin America are basically over, so combined with the weak late legs in the area (and in China) we shoudn't expect much more than a 3x from this weekend. Likely a 950M OS-Japan-Italy. That translates into 1.5B+ WW without those twomarkets. Pretty sure Jurassic World shouldn't worry too much.
  12. Harsh >50% drop. 1B is still locked, but a total above TS3 now requires a big help from Japan's legs. I hope it doesn't stop below DM3. Edit: nevermind

  14. Answer/1 > one could say that apart from the Minions, Illumination only produced movies that for the audience are somehow attracting and worth a ticket, but also totally forgettable. In that case, their hits are less likely to produce franchises (even though when they do they're massive). Answer/2 > Slop was NOT hated, but eventually ignored/forgotten, which in the world of box office is not that different in terms of result. Very few people are able to say the name of at least 2/3 slop characters, and I guess something similar could be said about Sing!, but this is certainly not true for Despicable Me. That's the difference. Also, Pets 2 just got a pretty bad release date compared to other Illumination movies: Sing! was released during Christmas and had little competition, Despicable Me 3 was released in the summer and run alone in a wasteland - Pets 2 was sandwiched between two competitors that combine for 2B+ WW (Aladdin and TS4) and the early June release has rarely produced big BO stories. Minions 2 is released in the usual Illumination slot, its characters are still very popular and its only concerns are a Pixar original and the Rock Cruise (which is a big ? right now) - so it should be just fine.

The opening will be between 900K and 1.1M depending on how much weather helps it. Of course, a MIB movie that needs help to get to 1M over the 4-day is pretty pathetic, but it's also perfectly in line with its WW performance. Aladdin back in the top 10 despite the big screen loss.
  16. Yeah, it shows that the trend hasn't changed at all. Some blockbusters may put the grosses in an overall respectable range, but people still don't like to see movies in summer. That's one side of the problem, 1/4 of the year is basically wasted. The other side is that the overall population may be 60M+, but in the south people go to the cinema very very little and most of the grosses are collected between Milan and Rome.

Unless the forecast is wrong and we're getting hot weather again over the weekend, the movie will open above 1M (150K admissions). It would be a higher debut than Godzilla, Pets 2 and Dark Phoenix. Far From Home got hit hard and only a rainy weekend can save it from another harsh drop. Midsommar wil likely fail to reach 1M at the end of its entire run. The Current War fell a lot more than Serenity - I totally didn't see that coming. Oh, and 571 tickets sold across the whole country are enough to make Little debut in the top 10.

BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY - € 4.923 - 910 Bohemian Rhapsody back in the top 10 yesterday! It's not uncommon to see successful films getting a modest re-release in summer, what's less common is to see the rereleased film entering the top 10 o.O Spider Man: FFH reached the 9M total (9.070.293). Temperature will drop a little this weekend and there will be some moderate bad weather in the north, so hopefully this translates into a sub-50% drop for Parker. And into the first good hold of TS4. Today Midsommar debuts in 230 screens and MIB4 in 550. Fome some reasons that only the theater owner know, Aladdin's showtimes got decimated. Also, Endgame loses pretty much all of ita screens.
  19. Looks like 5M admissions to me as well. With a 130K Thursday it should make 800/900k over the weekend. Then Pets 2 + SK late legs will give it an average 50/55% weekly drop.
  20. Yeah, and 210K on Monday. I thought it didn't make much sense to post daily numbers that have nothing interesting to show, and that it may be a good idea to just post the whole Mon-Wed frame on Thursday morning.

So another perc. point gained over last year. So, while bad relatively to expectations and hopes, this weekend was actually another big improvement over last year. The overall gain would already be enough for 2019 to get around 100M admissions over the year. Once Hobbs & Shaw opens, the gain will have reached the double digit. Spider Man: FFH got hit hard by the very good weather, and likely more people going on vacation. 11+ doesn't seem too likely anymore, but it still has a solid shot at overtaking Aquaman (01/01/19 release here) for the #2 superhero movie of the year. Fingers crossed. Serenity narrowly beats The Current War, though I think the latter should win at the end of the run. Modest grosses for both, but considering the overall weekend, not too shabby. The only movie that dropped very well was...Aladdin 3M admissions would have certainly be in the cards with EG's release date. Unfortunately, scorching sun came a few days after its release. Still a very good result. Out of the top 10, Endgame grossed 16.164 (down around 70%) for a 30.244.866 total. Sooooo close to Alice in Wonderland! 20k tickets away. This week, MIB International, Midsommar and Little. I hope the former can at least get an opening above 1 million, but I wouldn't bet on it.
