But 2019's lead on 2018 has for some reason dropped from +14.38% to 13.75%. Not a good weekend at all. Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood held much worse than Django, which had a sub-30% fall for a 2.6M 2nd weekend. Hollywood's lead is big enough (+1.60M) to avoid a result below that movie's 12M total. The dream of overtaking Aladdin (15.4M) is totally gone. All the openers fell below expectations. Rambo's result is particularly disappointing as the 2008 movie opened 1M higher and finished with 3.5M. To finish below its predecessor's OW is really a disaster. Brad Pitt won his battle against Stallone, but it can't be happy about that. One would think that if First Man can gross around 3M, Ad Astra should be good for more than that, but it's even doubtful it reaches the 2M mark. Toy Story 4 lost pretty much all its showings and its run is now over. It will stop 30/40k below Hobbs & Shaw, but above it in admissions. This weekend we have: * Joker > Venom opened to 3.7M and the character is very popular here; also, its Venice win can only help and the reviews it's getting are mostly great; however, I'll remain conservative given it opens when Tarantino is still strong and it's not really as mainstream as Venom; let's say 3.0/3.5M OW * Abominable > probably in line with the rest of the world, meaning 0.5+ OW and 1.0+ total (Smallfoot did 0.8/1.6) *and 2 local comedies... Note: instead of the pretty useless projected total, I thought I might use the last coloumn to show how the weekend would look like after adjusting the actual numbers to the North America ones. Of course itìs not an objective adjustement, but it gives you an idea.

It's down 32% from last Saturday, though it's totally unlikely that it will match last Sunday's crazy surge (+53%). Pretty strong multiplier for Ad Astra so far, though not strong enough to overcome that bad OD. It needs a 40% Sunday increase or so to avoid a sub-1M opening, and without the help of the rain it's again pretty impossible. Dora obviously got the biggest Saturday rise (higher than +300%). However, all of them opened below expectations, especially Ad Astra and Dora (and Rambo, if it turns out to even be sligthly frontloaded). Vivere is the only local film that made it into the top 10, but 4k admissions on OD isn't exactly something to be proud of. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood dropped on all its dailies, but the Thursday hold is good enough to make the number look perfectly acceptable. It's down about 55% from its first Thursday and will recover over the weekend. Tarantino now stands at 7.24M and should be able to pass It 2 (currently at 9.18) on either Sunday or Monday.

Last year Incredibles 2 opened with 4.2 millions, so a little lower than Once, but the 2.4M OW of The Nun was almost as much as what the #2, 3, 4 and 5 movie of this weekend have been able to do combined. Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood did very good, though it was able to slightly overtake my 4.0/4.5 OW range just thanks to the awful Sunday weather. The opening is the strongest Tarantino opening ever. Among recent titles we have: * The Eightful Eight > 3.5M OW // 8.5M total * Django > 3.6M OW // 12.0M total * Inglorious Basterds > 2.0M OW (3-day) // 9.4M total Considering that the opening was inflated by the bad weather and that competition is going to be tough, I'd put its multiplier closer to Eightful Eight's rather than Django's. A 13M+ finish would also mean the same legs of Incredibles 2, which (as mentioned above) opened on the same weekend of the year with around 90% of Once's opening and finished just a tad above 12M. The Lion King got helped by the bad weather and jumped 100%+ on Sunday. The movie has now reached 5.543.136 admissions, including Monday's gross of 51.266 euros (8.555 adm). If not for Avatar 2, it could keep its #3 position on the all time Hollywood chart for one decade. IT 2 is just plain embarassing. Can't believe this is going to get a sub-2x multiplier. And I can't believe it fell by almost 60% on a weekend when every holdover in the top ten drops less than 40%. A very disappointing performance. Angry Birds 2 was helped a lot by the weather too (it did 2/3 of its business on Sunday), but it won't have a long life: with Dora and Shaun both coming this Thursday, there will be 2 more options for desperate kids. Toy Story 4 is one hell of an anomaly. This is basically a re-release due to the lack of options for families (the two bigger chains even had Dora and Shaun previews on Sunday to fight that). It will likely drop 90% next weekend, but an extra 150K is still helpful anf gives it a small chance of overtaking Hobbs and Shaw (which will stop at 6.38 or so). This week, a lot of movies: * Ad Astra > 1.5M+ OW (First Man was a respectable 3M hit here, and Brad Pitt still has drawing power) * Dora > 0.5/1.0M OW (might do decently thanks to the emptiness of the family market) * Shaun: Farmageddon > 0.5M OW (same for Dora, but the potential is lower) * Yesterday > no clue, probably around Dora numbers * Rambo Last Blood > 1.5M+ (it's Rambo - the previous movie did 3.7M total) * and 3 local titles! Mid-40% drop for Tarantino. So holdovers will get hurt a lot (and the smaller ones will be thanosed). And if Ad Astra opens well enough, we'll have Brad Pitt as leading actor in the #1 and #2 movie of the weekend.
  9. Back from 4 days of holidays. Weekend analysis later. As of now: Once Upon a Time did 775K on Thursday (crazy good drop from Wednesday), 888K on Friday (weak increase), 1.141M on Saturday (acceptable jump) and 1.701M on Sunday (wonderful rise). Bast Tarantino debut ever by a big margin. It 2 did 79K on Thursday, 111k on Friday, 189K on Saturday, 207K on Sunday (even out of the top 5 in admissions that day) The Lion King did 74K on Thursday, 109k on Friday, 244K on Saturday, 508K on Sunday Once did very good. The King got a good drop. It 2 collapsed despite the weather help on Sunday. And Toy Story 4 is back in the top 10 thanks to a theater count surge due to the absolute lack of kids products (LK is on its 5th weekend and Angry Birds failed - and there's nothing else for families).

Another small increase in the lead, but it should have been considerably higher. Sunny weather, dullness of openers and It's terrible frontloading - everything went wrong. It 2 did awfully, good weather or not. It's confortably the steeper drop in the top 10, and keep in mind that in Italy the second weekend's hold tends to be stronger than the others. The movie did almost 50% less than what the first It did on its second weekend despite losing just 1/4 of the original's audience on OW. It was at 11.4 millions at the same point of the run, and finished with 14.5. Using the same multiplier It 2 would finish at 9.6M - so my 9.8 projection is even optimistic. A double digit total is less and less likely. That said, this kind of total remains incredibly high for a horror movie and it's still more than enough for a spot in the top 10 yearly chart. The Lion King was expected to fall hard, but losing 2/3 of the audience is a little too much. Not like it matters: it's already way past Endgame, and became the only non-Cameron Hollywood movie in the all time top 10. With 6M admissions and 40M total both unreachable, it really has no milestone left. Nobody probably cares, but Angry Birds 2 is a major failure. The first movie was a respectable 3.1M grosser, while this movie may just finish with 1/3 of that, especially since there's no rain next weekend either and the Dora+Shaun the Sheep combo is coming in 10 days. Tolkien, Good Boys and Vox Lux all opened outside the top 10 in a kinda limited amount of theaters. Not a bad decision by the distribution, considering that even with few screens only Vox Lux managed a somehow decent PTA. Hobbs & Shaw dropped 76% and is now at 6.330.103. It should stop below 6.4M. This week...Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Tarantino + DiCaprio + Pitt = big money. The Wolf did 11.9M, Revenant 13.9 and Django 12.0 among comparable titles. Everything below The Wolf of Wall Street would be a disappointment. For now, let's go with a 4.0/4.5M OW and a 12.5/13.0M total.
  12. I'd be very surprised to see Once going sub-10M euros in Italy. 15M$ in play.

Being a horror movie it was supposed to get a better jump on Friday, especially to make up for the weak Thursday. A >60% drop this weekend is becoming pretty likely (it has to rise like 110%+ today in order to avoid it). I don't see how it could recover on a sunny SS. Though the biggest problem with It 2 in not this drop, but the fact that it's due to its already disappointing opening being even inflated. It stands at 7.21M right now. It should still reach the double-digit mark, though it will stop around there. Would be a 30% drop from the first chapter.

Of course it will get a much better IM, but with the sunny weekend coming it may not be good enough to make it stay above 2M (59% drop). I still stubbornly think it will drop around 55% or better. The Lion King had an expected big drop from Wednesday (-49%). It should multiply by 10 its Thursday number of the weekend, for a 50% drop. Angry Birds 2 debuted with an obvious weak number. That said, it should get the bet Thu-to-weekend multiplier and finish the weekend at #3 with around 650/700K. Hobbs & Shaw out of the chart after 5 weeks of release. More than enough after their week start.

If it doesn't at least get below 200K today, it's worth a WTF. Anyways it passed the 34M mark and stands right 1M admissions above Endgame. IT 2 continues its weak daily behaviour. It can still make like 320K today, 450K on Friday, 700K on both Saturday and Sunday for a respectable drop in the mid-50%, but I'm starting to be pessimistic about that.

  18. 15M domestically sounds reasonable. 4.2 of its OS weekend comes from Italy, where it's going to do like 7M more. 1.8 from Japan, where the film should add 10M more. The remaining 7.4 comes from leggy European markets, so say 25M more (not more cause the bad weather kind of inflated its weekend gross). We have 1.600+15+7+10+25 = 1657M At this point of its run finding an extra 15M is very very difficult. LK needs to be endgamed to overtake JW.

Its goal is to get to 7M (or very close to that) by tomorrow. That would lock a 10+ finish. The Lion KIng has its first normal weekday, a 60%+ decrease from last Monday, due to most schools starting either tomorrow or the day after. I'm expecting it to drop all the weekdays and get below 150K on Thursday. And the documentary Apollo 11 - one of the usual 3-day (Mon/Tue/Wed) events - opens in the podium. Edit: And in case you're wondering, yes...the #10 title is the 1969 film starring Peter Fonda.

The lead keeps increasing, and a 20% gain over last year now looks quite possible. Among 10M+ contenders we have: * Once Upon a Time in Hollywood > very likely, probably a 12M final gross * Joker > needs to do 20% better than Venom, so chances are there * Maleficent 2 > 80% chance; the first did 14M - and it's a Disney film starring Angelina Jolie and a princess * Frozen 2 > well... * Star Wars: TROS > this may drop from TLJ, but can't go that low - so another lock * Pinocchio > released on Christmas Day and starring Benigni - a wildcard IT 2 opened right were I expected it to open (665K admissions and a pretty damn high ATP), but it's hard not to be disappointed after that 1.4M OD. That OD was a 16% improvement over the first IT, but the whole OW is down 23%. Legs should be weak (the first did a bit more than 2.2x) but enough to push its total in the double digit. The Lion King is 50K away from 5M admissions. Endgame destroyed. Angel Has Fallen is holding surprisingly well. Passing London is very likely at this point. Great legs for Hobbs & Shaw too - just like with TS4 they make the performance look less embarassing. Italian releases are a joke. 99% of them fail to do decent numbers, and every time they open they just kill the other local movies' legs. This week, a bunch of minor movies open: Angry Birds 2, Late Night, Vox Lux (a bit late...), Good Boys and Tolkien. Along with the good weather coming back, they'll kill the smaller holdovers.

Reaching that goal was always a strong possibility for the latest Disney live action, but to do so as soon as its third weekend and with a Sunday that blockbusters often hope to reach on OW is incredible. That said I still don't believe it's going to reach the 40M mark. First because school start this week; second, because late legs in Italy are often very weak; third because next weekend is turning sunny again, IT 2 had a sub-5M debut, pretty crazy after that insane 1.4M OD. 2M admissions isn't going to happen, especially since ticket prices are so damn high.
