  1. Maleficent is a kid's movie in many ways. Those are still going to get a 3x no matter what. And I talk to regular people about movies often. Anecdotal evidence isn't everything, but the word of mouth around me among the GA has been good for X-men, Apes, and even Transformers. I'm sure if WOM was bad for Apes, we'd know about it. I also just refuse to believe that based on how fucking great that movie is on every level.
  2. Hmm, regarding Apes, and the rest of this summer to an extent...is word of mouth a dying concept at this point?
  3. I don't get the Lucy appeal. Looks like every other Besson movie.
  4. If Apes does drop that much this weekend then I think we can say we've officially entered a new era in regards to movie quality vs. legs. Maybe this is the new norm?
  5. Clarke's a good actor, but he hasn't yet shown the ability that Franco has. People have forgotten about his performances in 127 Hours and Pineapple Express.
  6. I don't understand the appeal of sports that hinge on nationalism and "I'm from here, so I root for this team." It doesn't help that the stick and ball thing just doesn't impress me. MMA is the only sport that piques my interest.
  7. It's a bandwagon thing though. In two weeks time nobody will care about soccer again. That's what's annoying. I have nothing against soccer. But I do hate America's bandwagoning love for it right now.
  8. Yes. Because Godzilla is #1. Because I know why they voted for it. "Wah, wah, not enough of Godzilla destroying things."
  9. Has anyone seen Rolling Stone's reader-polled list of the worst movies of the year so far? Talk about a wake-up call about how many idiots there are out there.
  10. I think a 3x is more than enough to retain hope in legs. Then again maybe I'm just more cynical.
  11. We keep saying this (myself included), but what exactly constitutes a breakout? When you think about it, all it really means is a movie exceeding expectations, which Neighbors and TFIOS already did. Apes still has a shot at doing such too.
  12. You guys are so dramatic. In any other summer these particular movies disappointing or not doing gangbusters wouldn't be surprising. The problem is that this is all this summer has to offer (so far). The only one that's surprising is HTTYD2, and there's a myriad of reasons for it besides "moviegoing is dying."
  13. The way Deliver Us has been described by critics and guys like Drew McWeeny, I think it might be another one of those horror flicks that's actually pretty good but gets shit on by journalists.
