  1. For sure Titanic will be my number 1 and Spirited away as number 2. Need to re-listen to some score.
  2. Yes, especially when the bigger are Sci-fi LOTR may be an one-off outlier but if you look closer, LOTR visual style and set design did look a lot more resemble to those epic films from older days like Lawrence of Arabia or Ben-Hur. Probably this is why they eat this up.
  3. @SLAM! I think it is time to consider that nominating a big box office hit is no longer a draw factor for Oscar ceremony. 2014's Oscar we have 4 movies pass 100m with gravity on top at 274m. That year we had 43m+ viewership. 2020's Oscar we have 5 movies pass 100m and joker came at top with 335m. This ceremony barely hit 23m rating. Both ceremony give a 50m grosser like 12 years a slave and parasite the ultimate prize. Yet 2020 Oscar lose 20m+ audience. Why? I rewatch both Oscar ceremony and that clearly there is an distinction between both. 2014 Oscar , hosted by Ellen had so much fun within that I don't really need to watch a lot of nominees to enjoy throughout but that wasn't the case for 2020 Oscar. People or hollywood needs to wake up. People watch an award show for escapism. You can't provide your audience both serious tone nominees and award show at the same time. And you see, Green Book and Parasite are still receiving notable Oscar bump after their win, meaning people actually pay attention to oscar. They just don't like to attend a political , left or right, lecturing. The moment you realise oscar is truly dead, is when wining an Oscar best picture failed to provide you any commercial bump
  4. Avatar vs Hurt locker during 2010 award season is basically a remake of 1978's Oscar when Star Wars vs Annie Hall.
  5. Look at all those Oscar bump , either in streaming platform or box office, Oscar give massive publicity to a lot of small indie films that no other platform can provide. GG maybe a redundant but not Oscar Popularity does not equal to excellency. And you are suggesting that Frozen2, ROTS or TLK are the year top 5 best? Don't make me puke. General public only want escapism which is understandable, but art is art. It needs elitism.
  6. My top 25 from my random thought and FYC. 1. Spirited away 2. Graves of the firelies. 3. Toy Story 4. Toy story 2 5. Toy story 3 6. Waltz with Bashir 7. Triple of Belleville 8. Finding Nemo 9. Zootopia 10. Inside out 11. Snow white and the 7 drawf 12. Your Name 13. The tale of princess kaguya 14. Millennium actress 15.Ratatouille 16. A silent voice 17. Castle in the sky 18. The Croods 19. Monster Inc 20. Frozen 21.Spiderman into the spiderverse 22. How to train your dragon 23. The prince of Egypt 24. Boy and the World 25. Akira
  7. Good, we are in excess supply of award shows , hope this give more suspense to Oscar season, either in term of nomination or winner. Also, to note that, how hard is to increase a organization's diversity? This isn't a big difficult tasks right?
  8. AQP2 PS should be quite back-loaded. Paramount haven't really their final push, seem like they are reserving the buzz energy latter. And i realised they have withdraw their 1st teaser and full trailer from public list on you tube. Only final trailer are visible. Not sure why they are doing this.

  10. The power of word of mouth and at least some reasonable paywall between streaming and theater run <blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON<br>$1.86M Weekend (Est.)<br>2,315 Screens / $805 Avg.<br>Weekend 10 / +35.0% Change<br>$43.81M Total (North America)<a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Raya?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#Raya</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/DisneyRaya?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#DisneyRaya</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/RayaAndTheLastDragon?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#RayaAndTheLastDragon</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Disney?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#Disney</a> <br> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/BoxOffice?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#BoxOffice</a></p>&mdash; Boxoffice Pro (@BoxOffice) <a href="https://twitter.com/BoxOffice/status/1391393433294606343?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">May 9, 2021</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
  11. Raya seem finally gaining ground to defeat T&J in a deserving way. GvK still holding slightly better than ww84 thus far, mainly due to much lower 2nd week drop but WW84 have decent hold 3rd week onward. I think 100m is still in touch without needing much pushes. As for MK, the hold is so bad that you have to re-evaluate if the first week success is still a success. Losing to a niche foreign language anime is not a small feat for a trailer's record-breaker. Perhaps it doesn't mean much since people in 2020-21 are staying indoor so they more likely see trailer online. Nobody suffered its first major drop since GVK opening, thanks to direct competition, hope it can still hit 30m. Overall market is still very weak. We already have 63% theater coming back to live. Assuming 50% capacity, we should be running at one-third of the pre-covid weekend total but in fact, we still far behind from that target.
  12. What if people are willing to show vaccination proof when they buy their ticket over the counter? Several sources tell me there’s no way exhibition can or will enforce its attendees to show proof of vaccination, and therefore will opt to operate at 50%.
  13. Actually why not just combine critic choice and GG? We clearly in the age of excess supply of award shows. We don't need CC/GG/PGA/BAFTA to repeatedly telling us the nomadland will be the ultimate winner of the season. Multiple award shows are causing the fatigue and killing the suspense during Oscar night. It is time to reform them
  14. Mid-week drop is about 29% , improved from 34% drop during last weekend . <blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">GODZILLA VS. KONG<br>$91.03M Total (North America) <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Godzilla?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#Godzilla</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Kong?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#Kong</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/GodzillaVsKong?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#GodzillaVsKong</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/BoxOffice?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#BoxOffice</a></p>&mdash; Boxoffice Pro (@BoxOffice) <a href="https://twitter.com/BoxOffice/status/1390737299072245762?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">May 7, 2021</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> 69% mid-week drop compared to 73% during weekend. <blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="ca" dir="ltr">MORTAL KOMBAT<br>$35.47M Total (North America) <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/MortalKombat?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#MortalKombat</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/MortalKombatMovie?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#MortalKombatMovie</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/BoxOffice?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#BoxOffice</a></p>&mdash; Boxoffice Pro (@BoxOffice) <a href="https://twitter.com/BoxOffice/status/1390737161583042568?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">May 7, 2021</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
  15. Given all the progress we have made from GVK time, both in cinema reopening and covid cases/ vaccination, this would be truly disastrous if AQP2 didn't gain any from GVK number. And it is not like AQP did any lower than monster Verse during Pre covid time. 50m is the goal if no cinema is gone
  16. Seem like they know they can't compete in streaming platform, they going full for theater. Now they give 45days window for AQP2 , I hope they give 60days when normalcy fully resume
  17. The movie was only 1 hour 40m, yet they have to release another trailer simply because all the buzz hyped by previous 2 were gone down in drain......I heard Paramount had spent 60% of the marketing budget prior its postponement.
  18. Seem like a super busy schedule for Monday business
  19. Actually the production team have been doing this as to assign "somebody" as presenter to the category based on their likely winner. Last year, 3 superhero actresses giving out best original score to female composer hildur last year. Sophia Loren give best foreign language to Roberto. All these are the examples of how the ceremony create its so-called moment. In those cases, many of the outcome went exactly as predicted and were done more naturally and subtle. This year order switch carry the same spirit but this flub was done way more intentional and therefore when it failed, the disaster got bigger. Worst of all, they didn't even have plan b to have at least olivia Colman to deliver speech on behalf.
  20. Killmonger was such a great asset in BP1, such a pity they kill him off this early. But I guess in MCU death doesn't exist as no matter how they made Loki and gamora's death seem real and permanent, they got revived one way or another eventually
  21. https://deadline.com/2021/05/oscars-hit-bottom-do-something-anything-call-bill-maher-1234748230/ As The Oscars Hit Bottom, Do Something, Anything. Call Bill Maher! So the final rating number is at 10.4m, at least it did break 10m threshold. I wonder why is everyone so panic about this. Can't they foresee this before the ceremony? This year the Oscar buzz just isn't there for obvious reason. People have other priority and no way streaming can replace that fuzzy buzzy Oscar hype.
  22. AQP2 will be a fun thing to watch. The marketing and red carpet last year all went down in drain, but those marketing can't have zero impact right? Hope the final push last year did serve some awareness building for upcoming major debut
  23. I like how both MK+DS overperform last week only to underperform altogether in their 2nd week
