Funny thing about Annihilation: I recommended it a lot and most of my generation loved it (late 20s, early 30s) but teens and friends' parents hated it.
I went out with a 23 years old yesterday and my comment after every story was some kind of "yeah, I remember when I didn't get soul crushing hangovers. Those were the days"

Nah. Look at Overboard's Sat. If they did, the UCL final would have dented it. Not only is the game in the afternoon, it'd involve alcohol that goes on for the rest of the day (we had a post-game bbq until 3 am)
The creators are on record saying that "themes are for college essays". So not a surprise character/plot/thematic consistency is not a concern for them.
Once they lost the guidance of the books any logic or character work left. It remains a very cinematic collection of cool moments, so it has its crowd. But I'm not looking forward to any work D&D come up with in the future.
