  1. One thing I didn't appreciate was how the characters made snide, skeptical remarks about fanciful events when they obviously live in a world that has magic. Yes, please do follow that origami Hanzo. You're a freaking monkey that came from a charm.
  2. I thought the first minutes were the most conventional. What with the cliche of the elderly woman who acts like an immature child filling the comic relief role, among other things.
  3. Astonishingly beautiful set pieces in a story that doesn't really make sense. Contrivances come at such a rabid pace in the third act that I couldn't help but raise an eyebrow. Still, for the middle there, I was enchanted. For some reason, I was tearing up at the end, but the resolution of Kubo and his Grandfather's conflict left me unsatisfied. The comedy beats are lifted straight from the Disney/Dreamworks playbook as well. And putting "making of" footage in the credits is a crass ego-trip. What the fuck? But overall, this is a solid B.
  4. Predictions: Original Winner: Manchester by the Sea Nominees: -Moonlight -La La Land -Hell or High Water -20th Century Women Adapted Winner: Silence Nominees: -Fences -Arrival -Hidden Figures -Hacksaw Ridge
  5. Addendum. They really should have had Jennifer Yuh Nelson on the panel. Yeah, Kung Fu Panda 3 was a January release, but they could have used some diversity.
  6. Lol, there aren't even any reviews yet: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/incarnate_2016 This is a mega-bomb.
  7. @eXtacy Your Name is completely sold out at its one location. http://www.movietickets.com/movie/mid/235901/n/Your-Name-(Kimi-no-na-wa)/SearchZip/90001/SearchRadius/40/tstate/0#.WEGEo_krLIU
  8. I'm not sure that's how it works. Big Hero 6 won relatively few critics' awards, yet it still got the Oscar. Obviously, the biggest factor in Zootopia's favor is that it's Disney's current favorite.
  9. OK, but I heard a different story elsewhere. That it really started in 1998 with Jorgen Klubien. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jim-hill/disney-cars-films_b_890538.html I think you're confusing the Second Toy Story with the first one. They decided to make the Toy Story sequel instead of Cars.
  10. What are you even talking about? That's just simply not the development history of the movie.
  11. Personally, Violet blowing up like a big blueberry in Willy Wonka freaked me the fuck out when I was 4.
  12. http://variety.com/video/animation-roundtable-zootopia-sausage-party/ At the 20 minute mark, Garth Jennings reveals that he based Reece Witherspoon pig on his wife.
  13. Guys, you need to watch this. Directors from the three biggest frontrunners are on this roundtable. http://variety.com/video/animation-roundtable-zootopia-sausage-party/ I'm talking about Rich Moore from Zootopia. Travis Knight from Kubo and the Two Strings. Even Michael Dudok de Wit from The Red Turtle. There are even four other directors from this competitive year. Conrad Vernon from Sausage Party, Mark Osborne from The Little Prince, Mike Mitchell from Trolls and Garth Jennings from Sing.
  14. Yeah, but that's for every movie. 4 year olds can be scared by literally anything.
  15. Looks like Moana is following a trend that The Good Dinosaur started: first Tuesday has a bump, but the Wednesday falls sharply from that. 16. Now I'm rolling in to say that I don't think it has a shot. You left out Hell or High Water as a replacement, btw.
