  1. Lots of critics are. Not sure if Zootopia's going to win any more critic awards other than the NYFCC it already has. Still, critic awards don't always predict the Oscars in this category. Strong Disney bias in the Academy.
  2. Currently on Gold Derby: http://www.goldderby.com/odds/expert-odds/oscars-nominations-2017/ 24 experts have weighed in. 20 of them think Zootopia will get the Animated Feature Oscar. 3 of them think Kubo and the Two Strings will win. 1 of them thinks Sing is the one. None of them think that Your Name will be nominated.
  3. Even with an Oscar nomination, I doubt it will get a truly wide release. Ghibli never had much success at the North American box office, and I don't see how Your Name will do better.
  4. I'm not even sure it's getting a wide release in the USA.

  6. Smart choice for a new date. I don't think Captain Marvel the next week is perfect competition, either.
  7. Is this going to end up under Whiplash's total of $13m? I guess it will be close. It could be next to the lowest grossing Best Picture nominee since 2012.
  8. A charming and funny film. Informative, if one isn't from Germany.
  9. I think that the main reason this movie has so much credence in critics' groups is because it's an amazing technical achievement. In terms of thematic depth, it's at the same level as the Kung Fu Panda movies. Don't get me wrong, Kung Fu Panda and Kubo are both very good. But I don't think anyone outright praises either for their genius scripts.

  11. I like that goofier stuff, actually. The issue is that Fantasia 2000 just wasn't marketable.

  13. Haven't seen any announcements about NYFCO or BOFCA.
  14. Oh shit, guys. The WAFCAs are coming up in less than 12 hours! http://www.dcfilmcritics.com/ The 2016 WAFCA Award WINNERS will be announced at 8AM ET on Monday, December 5, 2016.
  15. That's really big for Your Name. I wonder if it's going to be the next mega-hit.
  16. Oooh, now this is interesting. This might get a headline on an animation related website, causing Animation Branch members to notice Your Name. Isn't it wonderful that three different movies have won major critic awards in this category? The other two winners weren't even the runners up here. Really surprised that The Red Turtle is the runner up, though. Thought it might win.
  17. They had like 3 different studios at one time in the late 90s. California, Florida and France. Now it's just one. One of the reasons why they're not going back to 2D animation is that they have such an efficient pipeline for CGI hits. It's just 6 months straight by animators in Los Angeles, and there's the movie.
  18. Best Youth Performance: Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea) Lewis MacDougall (A Monster Calls) Sunny Pawar (Lion) Hailee Steinfeld (The Edge of Seventeen) Anya Tayor-Joy (The Witch) Really surprised that Alex Hibbert or Ashton Sanders from Moonlight aren't here.
