  1. Yeah been listening to it non-stop the last few days. Too bad the Springsteen isn't there either, it's probably my favorite scene in the whole thing.
  2. Lucy is the kind of movie that should have had a $200m budget but only got what, 1/5 of that, so it just kept spinning its wheels doing almost nothing with its concept until the very end. I was truly disappointed by what a bore it was.
  3. I wanted to like it a lot more than I did. I saw I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House the next day though and that movie made sure I'll see anything this guy does from now on.
  4. I just watched an early Andrea Arnold short in which a dude literally kicks a puppy to death and that was less bleak than reading the last few pages here.
  5. My Best Actor candidates to choose from right now are Colin Farrell, Gosling (in Nice Guys), Logan Lerman, Peter Simonischek, maybe Radcliffe... and that's pretty much it? Shit I'm probably putting Rylance in my line-up too, especially if I don't see Manchester in time and/or I'm not crazy about Gosling in LLL.
  6. After seeing your RTM post I'm more convinced than ever that it would have benefitted from the Tree of Life type release, coming out early in 2017 outside of all the crazy awards fever and actually getting a chance to stay with people for weeks and months. Wouldn't have set the box office on fire or become a big awards frontrunner but definitely would have had a bigger chance at a Best Picture nomination.
  7. Best Actor should at least give us an atypical winner in Affleck, this is basically just gonna be, "OK, Viola Davis has an Oscar now. Moving on..."
  8. 1. The Witch 2. I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House 3. Don't Breathe 4. Train to Busan 5. Ouija: Origin of Evil 6. The Wailing 7. Hush 8. The Conjuring 2 9. Green Room 10. Demon
  9. Way ahead of you. Decent little flick btw. In theaters, not counting movies that weren't released in the US, it was Microbe & Gasoline for me. Wow that movie got fucked, it's the best thing Michel Gondry has done since at least Be Kind Rewind and it topped out at 63k. Even being in foreign language it's audience-friendly enough that a good distributor could have been able to get a million or two out of it.
  10. To be blunt, I don't see how downloading a movie is any different than borrowing a DVD from someone. Except in this case I don't personally know them. But so what? Most of the movies I download are also those I wouldn't be able to see in the theater or buy even if I wanted to. They don't get a theatrical release here and/or a DVD release or an online release. Other times they are only released in dubbed versions whereas I'd like to see them in their original language. High-profile recent examples: OJ Made in America, The Wailing, Sing Street, The Invitation, Knight of Cups, any Netflix movie. 99.9% of documentaries, and don't even get me started on classics and cult films. There are so many of those I would never had a chance to see if not for torrent sites, and in that respect they are invaluable. And no, I'm not gonna wait for years and years if I want to see something. If a movie is released in theaters here in its original language (or I'm fine with watching the dubbed version) I make a trip to the theater every chance I get. And I have several hundred DVDs and blu-rays; I'll buy anything if I'm interested and it's in good quality, because I like owning physical objects and I want to support the people putting them together (even if it's plainly obvious that whole industry is on its way out). Still entirely cool with downloading anything I want.
  11. That would require high 20s/low 30s from 2300 theaters. Not impossible but pretty challenging.
  12. IMO Chris Pine and Bridges are leads and Foster and Birmingham are supporting. But yeah for our purposes both Bridges and Foster could use clarification.

  14. The Hollywood Reporter piece on La La Land said it spent almost a year in the editing room before Chazelle was satisfied with the tone. This should be less tricky.
  15. i'm halfway through The Wailing right now. It might be partly because i got a dozen shots of tequila in me but it's not really grabbing me. Well-crafted but not emotionally engaging. We'll see where it goes.
