Dazed and Confused IS way better than Everybody Wants Some!!, but that's only because D&C is one of like five or six best movies ever made and EWS is merely excellent. Also Paramount did the absolute worst possible job handling it. It was impressively bad even by their standards.

I remember in 2014 when two out of the three biggest Oscar contenders (Grand Budapest and Boyhood) were released in March and July, respectively, I hoped studios would finally realize how wide open the calendar is, but the way they've instead doubled down on scheduling everything they can in November and December is fucking bizarre.

Just keeping track of what response movies get at major festivals, following a few critics/film sites (AV Club's film section is mostly enough all by itself) and Letterboxd friends. Not to mention established filmmakers that I already know and like whose movies I'll often see without really caring how they were received by others.

An American in Paris feels like it's three years long though. But anyone who loved this and hasn't seen Umbrellas and Young Girls of Rochefort (and maybe even Singin' in the Rain and Top Hat) should correct that immediately. You won't regret it.

Back from a second viewing. Very glad to see that the bloom isn't off the rose. In fact I appreciated it more this time. It's definitely better at the big picture and broad strokes than it is at the details, but when it hits, goddamn. As a writer Chazelle is good but as a director he's got filmmaking in his blood.
