  1. As much as I like The Martian, it's hardly even worthy of a nom.
  2. I really doubt Trainwreck will beat out Bridge of Spies. The original category is gonna be a bloodbath this year, between Joy, Spotlight, and Inside Out alone. Steve Jobs has to have the most flashy script in the adapted category so I guess it'll win there. Maybe Carol or something has a small chance.
  3. The Goonies seemed barely above average to me when I saw it as a teen a few years ago. Can sorta kinda see where the nostalgia comes from, but eh. It was cool to see Samwise and Llewelyn Moss so young though.
  4. Was it? I checked the Wiki pages for both 3D and IMAX releases, neither specifies that it was shot in 2D.
  5. (Can't wait for the nomination day when it turns out the nominees are DOR, Hooper, Nemes, Abrahamson and Villeneuve, and this was all a total waste of energy)
  6. I know Bennett Miller managed it last year, but it still seems like a freak occurence with 5 BD spots and up to 10 BP spots. To me it's a lot more likely Bridge gets in BP and misses this category. Or doesn't get in either. Right now I think the win is between DOR and McCarthy with Miller (yes) as an extreme dark horse. Don't believe in Inarritu winning twice in a row. Haynes will be like Linklater and Wes Anderson last year, his first-ever nomination would be his win no matter how acclaimed the movie is.
  7. The narration hurts it severely (to the point where I breathed a sigh of relief every time he shut the fuck up for a minute), and there's no way it needs to be two hours long, but yeah, I'd say it has the greatest native 3D photography in any mainstream film so far. A film of contradictions, but it deserves to be seen for that alone. If you're even a tiny bit interested in it, do NOT wait for home video.
  8. If you told me before release Gopher and Baumer were gonna disagree on this movie, I totally would have assumed Gopher would be the one in love with it while Baumer would hate it.
  9. I know there's much less money in it but Hedlund should just stick to character actor roles like On the Road and Inside Llewyn Davis.
  10. Richard Linklater could give them some tips on what to do in that situation.
  11. I've cooled a bit on Short Term 12 after a second viewing, but I'm still curious about where Cretton is gonna go now. And I'll watch Larson in anything.
  12. The first couple of big jokes ("It's really too often" and "Faith") did nothing for me, though I could see them working better in the movie with more build-up. The trailer got better as it went along, Johansson looks especially good and Tatum as the cheerful dancer in a sailor suit is perfect. Doesn't look like much more than a fun romp, but hey, nothing wrong with that.
  13. One lazy Saturday night in January I'm gonna get really drunk and watch the shit out of this.
  14. Momentum can be built. There's a ton of time left. Good to know I'm not the only one who thinks Fury Road has a decent chance to get in. I'm pretty sure it's gonna have a lot of passion behind it, even if from fewer people.
  15. Saw this for the first time just now. Pretty fantastic, I especially liked how the film allows you to get as annoyed with Fonda as the other jurors are, before he starts making his case. All the actors nail it, even if half the characters are little more than types, but they are types convincingly brought to life, and Lumet perfectly sustains the energy for 96 minutes. I never even thought of checking my watch. I do have some nits to pick with it - all the attention being called to the "hottest day of the year" and the non-working fan is the kind of thing that tends to annoy me ("it's because they're gonna have a heated, emotional argument! Get it? Get it?!!"), and when the old guy started his racist monologue, everyone demonstrably turning away from him - capped off by "Now sit down and don't say another word" - felt like a reaction that was performed for the audience more than something that would've happened in real life. (I can easily believe they'd get disgusted with him, but not in such a stagey way). Still, the fact that those things stood out to me is, in a way, a further testament to how accomplished the rest of the film is.
  16. Carol The Hateful Eight Mad Max: Fury Road The Revenant Sicario On the outside looking in: Son of Saul, Spectre.
  17. Err, why is everyone predicting The Martian all of a sudden? What's so great about its cinematography? Interstellar looked much more striking and got snubbed, I don't see any way TM gets in.
