  1. For all the talk about how Marvel is too goofy and doesn’t take anything seriously, the Multiverse Saga has actually felt pretty dour to me, at least on the movie side. We’ve had movies like Eternals and WF, a Spider-Man movie with an ending that’s a lot more bitter than sweet, a Doctor Strange movie where a former hero becomes a villain, and even L&T, despite the goofy jokes, has some serious tonal whiplash.
  2. Speaking of Shang-Chi, I think one problem with the Multiverse Saga has been that it’s way too reliant on sequels. The last movie we got that wasn’t a sequel was Eternals. It’s like they’re uncomfortable about branching out with other characters outside of Disney+. Shang-Chi isn’t my favorite, but it’s been one of the better received MCU installments of the Multiverse Saga, and it didn’t have fan service and nostalgia to fall back on like NWH did.
  3. If this movie underperforms, then the Fast and Furious franchise will likely end on a cliffhanger. That would be an unfortunate way for a franchise with such a long history to go out.
  4. As I recall, when the trailer dropped in December, people in this thread suggested that this movie would be a hit because of some nostalgia for the Michael Bay films, which I don’t get. I don’t think the Transformers films have been gone long enough for people to feel nostalgic about them, especially when the franchise as a whole never left. Besides, do that many people really have a special fondness for the films with Shia LaBeouf? I suppose there maybe could’ve been a hook if they really went all in on the Beast Wars stuff, but this really does just look like another Transformers movie.
  5. So far in 2023 we’ve had the highest grossing Creed movie, the highest grossing John Wick movie and the highest grossing video game movie by a country mile.
  6. The hype for this is muted for what is supposed to be the finale to a beloved sub-franchise, and those tracking numbers are not promising. That should be a telltale sign that the MCU is in difficult position right now.
  7. Assuming the movie is a mess, I don’t think showing it at Cinemacon is necessarily proof to the contrary. Disney did the same thing with PotC 5. Cinemacon is meant to get theater owners excited about a movie’s chances of bringing in business. It’s not the same as premiering it at a film festival.
  8. From my experience, a lot of the Film Twitter types who go on about how much Marvel movies suck seem to make an exception when it comes to James Gunn. I guess they believe his films have more heart to them. That’s not to say that Gunn doesn’t have vocal detractors on Twitter, but they tend to be the Snyderverse people who are mad about Henry Cavill.
  9. I’m a little meh on these clips. They’ve basically just reinforced to me that the zany humor of these films doesn’t feel all that fresh anymore.
  10. So basically, Zaslav is either a Bob Iger wannabe who’s way in over his head, or he’s the Hollywood equivalent of a used car salesman.
  11. Again though, ViewerAnon said back in December that the movie was testing fine, then a few months later, he said he had heard for around half a year or so that the movie was testing horribly. When he was asked about this, he basically said that he lied in that initial tweet from December, because he didn’t want fans to freak out. I won’t deny that ViewerAnon is well connected, but I feel like people put him on too much of a pedestal, just because he was right about WW84. Anyway, I’m officially at the point where I’m tired of people constantly discussing and asking about test screenings. It’s gotten to the point where people on these forums are now asking things like “how has Oppenheimer been testing?”
  12. That’s not what he said. He said two conflicting things a few months sort, and when confronted about it, he claimed that he just didn’t want to freak fans out at first.
  13. They apparently don’t have enough money to do elaborate marketing campaigns for most of their movies. They’re prioritizing The Flash.
  14. A bunch of reactionary Internet personalities called the Mario movie “woke” for not making Peach a helpless damsel in distress, although many of those people did a 180 after the movie was a big hit.
  15. Why? GoT was eight seasons long. At least with Harry Potter, it was never adapted into television before.
  16. This is a threequel in a major geek franchise that’s being released in the Summer. I don’t think people should just take it as a given that it will have strong legs if it’s well liked. I’m sure it won’t be as front-loaded as MoM, but it’s still an MCU movie.
  17. I think what’s more amusing is that anyone could still think WBD actually know what they’re doing. Their stocks have been in free fall for a reason.
