  1. It’s sounding like the fears over this having divisive word of mouth might have been unfounded.
  2. The people describing this as the darkest movie in the MCU have sure gotten me curious.
  3. Oh man, is Beyond the Spider-Verse going to be the RotK of Hollywood animated movies?
  4. The longer version of NWH was a re-release. It wouldn’t make any sense to have competing versions in theaters at the same time.
  5. I’m a little late regarding the ‘edgelord’ discussion, but I would definitely say that it’s a pretty accurate description of Gunn’s style. Much of his work relies on the kind of shock humor that was all the rage post-South Park, and he’s not exactly shy about dealing with some dark and morbid subject matter.
  6. I don’t really know how it works, but I guess maybe since Cinemacon is planned months in advance, the cut they screened might’ve been from a couple of months ago. Anyone who’s more well versed in this can feel free to correct me if I’m wrong. In any case, the CGI they showed in the trailer is pretty rough, and I don’t know if I buy that the finished product will look any better.
  7. I thought for sure that the core cast would’ve been announced by now. This is less than two years away.
  8. NWH is a pretty messy film the more you think about it, but people didn’t care because it delivered exactly what they were hoping for. It had a novelty to it that made it stand out in a post-Endgame world, and managed to tug on people’s heartstrings in just the right way. Compare that to Quantumania, which is also seen as a messy film, but didn’t have the things NWH had going for it. As for Joker, I do remember that there were a few negative reviews that accused the movie of being “dangerous” or “irresponsible,” although it would be unfair to say that they comprised the majority of negative reviews. Some of the critics were just genuinely not impressed by it, because they’re familiar with Martin Scorsese’s filmography, and saw the movie as a shallow imitation.
  9. People here have said that superhero fatigue isn’t a problem as long as they make “good movies,” but I think the definition of a good superhero movie from both critics and general moviegoers have become more strict now compared to 10 years ago. The MCU was a very novel concept a decade ago. It accomplished something that was never thought to be possible, and spawned a bunch of imitators. Unfortunately, it’s not new anymore. People feel like they’ve seen everything, so it’s no longer exciting. This is precisely why I’ve maintained that James Gunn’s DCU is going to be fighting an uphill battle. It’s coming at a point where the concept has been played out.
  10. I never thought I’d see the day when critics would rag on a Guardians of the Galaxy film for being excessively dark and violent.
  11. If the movie manages to roughly stay where it is now after it gets to around 200 reviews, then that wouldn’t be the worst thing. At least it’s not a repeat of Quantumania.
  12. That goes without saying. No one is expecting it to be nearly as big as NWH. That doesn’t mean it won’t benefit from playing into people’s nostalgia. Contrary to what some might think, there are plenty of people who have a special fondness for Keaton’s Batman.
  13. If Marvel screws up the Fantastic Four, then there will be some serious problems.
  14. I liked NWH when I saw it in the theater, but it’s definitely a movie that gets by on emotions, rather than a well-crafted story or good internal logic. It sounds like this movie will be the same, but it is what it is.
