Very few things are leaked without Marvel/Feige's approval, yeah? I figured some stuff would start to leak before Saturday...this may not be the last. The SDCC panel will likely focus on the movies that are filming or in pre-production so I don't think they mind a leak like this. Many people knew there was a good chance Thor would get another movie, anyhow.

Well Thor was a part of the big 3 but I think everyone recognizes that he was shortchanged with the first two Thor movies and even in the pre-IW teamup films so it's understandable that he would get a fourth movie. Another Ant-Man and the Wasp movie is coming, I'm sure, but safe to say very few are clamoring for it. It can wait a little longer.

Don't underestimate the power of social media. It's created huge PR headaches for more than few celebrities and projects. I don't care to see a female Bond but the arguments against just don't hold up. In all the history of storytelling, writers and artists have always found new ways to adapt popular works, adding their own twists to the story. Now we're just seeing race and gender added to the equation. It's hardly a new concept and as long as adaptations and remakes remain popular, the "just create new characters" take won't catch on and certainly, should be applied to everything, not just projects with race or gender swapping. -

Even if Lashana's character takes up the 007 moniker in this movie, I doubt they would center future movies around her. I'll have to get actual confirmation of that before I believe it. Sounds like it could very well be a temporary gig for her within this movie, in which case this leak would prove to be especially bad since it will lead many to believe this was a bait and switch. -
China being a real place is a pretty important distinction so yeah, I don't think that first point holds up. It certainly looks like Shang will be Chinese American and most likely played by a Western actor, which in itself tells me that the Chinese market isn't the priorty. Now I'll be surprised if they don't cast popular Chinese actors in supporting roles to help build the hype in China. But I think it's safe to say they want this film to be just as big a domestic hit as anything else.
-
So... is Scarlett right? Should she be able to play whomever she wants in this less than equal or perfect world? Is the criticism not valid because there wasn't an outcry against something similar? Sorry but to suggest she shouldn't be called out or that there is sexism at play because those other actors over there weren't criticized is a mighty weak argument.

If this movie were being made primarily for China, Shang-Chi would be Chinese, not Chinese American and he'd most likely be played by a popular Chinese actor. The huge domestic success of Crazy Rich Asians and Black Panther, especially, is primarily why this movie is even getting made. Of course they want the movie to do well in China but I don't see how they've prioritized China over the domestic market. None of the decisions made thus far suggests that.

The problem with this view is that a studio is far less likely to spend 100+ million on a new/unknown property. Adapting stories with popular/existing characters will always be the preferred route but since the overwhelming majority of said characters are white, you aren't going to get much diversity. Thus, racebending becomes one solution. I'm all for creating new characters or adapting existing stories featuring people of color but this isn't an either/or situation. Both can and should be options.
-
Sure but I think this was a decision mainly based on the story that's being told and who was hired to bring the story to the screen. I don't think China is any more a priority than the domestic audience. Ludi would be a good choice, although he's in his 30s now. Wonder how open they are to expanding the age range. I've always thought Godfrey Gao would be a great choice but he's older than what they're looking for as well.

The source is The Daily Mail? Lol Better to wait for someone with a little more credibility. But I am enjoying how this news has already triggered the "social justice warriors are ruining everything" crowd. -
There is really very little complexity or nuance here. Seems like she's just trying to avoid sounding like a complete idiot or racist while obviously still resenting the fact that she was called out for taking a role she shouldn't have. In other words, she hasn't learned a thing. The idea that there is "a lot political correctness" in art now because a few more people of color are getting roles or because she can't get away with playing whomever she wants is laughable. I was indifferent to her before but now that she has put her ignorance on display, it's pretty obvious that she deserves all the criticism she gets.

Well to be honest, casting a Chinese American actor or making Shang Chinese American won't ensure that the movie does well in China. If that were their main motive, I think they would cast a popular actor from China. (This is Marvel we are talking about though and the Marvel brand will sell this movie more than anything else.) To me, this likely has more to do with the writer and director being Asian...notably, the script writer, David Callaham, who is Chinese American.

Nah, I'm actually miffed by those who want the same version of something they've seen before. I understand if one might not like the Iron Man connection but I certainly wouldn't want to see another "Spidey like Maguire", as I've always found him to be the most bland and boring version of the character. But if one prefers that version or wants to see Uncle Ben or red-haired MJ, the Raimi movies are there to watch and enjoy as much as one likes. I like that this version of Spider-Man is different, that he doesn't look or feel like a version of the character I've already seen in live action. I'd say this is one if the reasons these first two movies have been successful. Holland also brings a level of charm and vulnerability that makes Peter more lovable and sympathetic than he's ever been, imo.
-
I don't agree that he doesn't have charisma. He had his moments in JL where I thought, with the right script and direction, he could really be good as the lead in his own film. And even that deleted scene with Kiersey was promising. Now, he may not be as charming as Holland but Holland is at the top of the list for me among young actors. Miller doesn't necessarily need to be *that* good.

Given that The Flash is one of DC's most popular heroes (arguably the most popular outside of Batman/Supes/WW), I'd hope WB isn't handwringing over money. Of course I'd understand if we're talking an amount significantly higher than most solo CBMs, but WB shouldn't have the same concerns for this movie that they'd have for Shazam or an R-rated BoP or Joker.
