Yeah, I actually posted this back when it was first leaked and... I can't see her in this role either, lol. Although, that does look like the role she was cast in. I just wonder why they didn't reveal the character's name. She could still end up as the love interest as well but I do hope they cast someone else. It's a shame Marvel wasted Gemma Chan on a forgettable role in Captain Marvel because I definitely think she would be a better fit in this film.

As I said before, this movie is mainly getting made because of the domestic success of Black Panther and to some extent, Crazy Rich Asians. So it's no surprise that Marvel cast a Western lead. I've always thought that Shang being Chinese American would make for a more interesting story and set it apart from almost every other action film that centers an Asian lead. I've seen Asian Americans say they'd prefer for him to be American as well. Awkwafina's casting is interesting to me, in that, I can't really see her as the love interest. And I do wonder why Marvel didn't reveal who she's playing.

Goodness, these Madden takes are so bad. He's been in a big Disney movie since leaving GoT, an Elton John biopic, a lead role in a successful tv show that lead to him winning a GG. A fringe actor, he is not...nor would I say he's struggled. Now with a new Marvel franchise, he may turn out to be the most successful of all the actors who starred on GoT.

To be frank, Awkwafina being in this is a downer for me, not a fan of her at all. But Simu definitely seems like interesting casting. I have not seen him in anything yet (I've been meaning to watch Kim's Convenience) but he seems like a charming guy who a lot of people are raving about. I'm looking forward to seeing what he does with this role.

Lol. Thank you for setting us all straight on what the real problem is. 🙄 Seriously, Ariel's problem is not stupidity but naivete...she is only 16, after all. There is an argument to be made as to whether her happy ending should have involved changing who she is. But she had a fascination with the surface before Eric came along and ultimately, the message is that she should be free to explore and be whatever/whoever she wants to be.

As a black woman, I can tell you I don't find it insulting and really, I wish people would stop pushing this argument because it doesn't hold up. It's past time for all of us to realize that most of these characters are only white in the first place because of the time in which they were created and there is no valid reason why they can't be any other race. I'd say not wanting to see them as anything but white is actually what is short-sighted and lazy. Certainly, racebending is no more lazy than a straight-forward adaptation and if you're ok with other changes to the story (which happens with almost every adaptation) then I'm not sure why race should be a sticking point. Of course creating new stories and characters is a great idea but it should not be viewed as a substitution or better solution to race or gender bending. As long as these (predominantly white) adaptations remain popular, the latter will always be a great way to add diversity.

Well I figured from the start that the cast would look more like Brandy's Cinderella movie than another Black Panther. And I'm ok with it, especially since there is the danger of pushing a problematic narrative in which Ariel is seen as wanting to "escape" her black family for a life with a white prince. I also think Disney is just trying to cover all their bases. They want to spice up their live-action remakes, capitalize on the popularity of diverse casting while not excluding one of their main demos (white women - hence, the desire to cast someone like Harry Styles).

So I'm used to getting something spoiled for me in these movies before making it to the theater and Mysterio revealing Spidey's identity was the spoiler for this one. But I'm so glad I knew nothing about that J.K. cameo. What a marvelous surprise. I hope Watts and company don't find some way to ruin Peter/MJ. That kiss scene is one of the sweetest moments I've seen in any cbm. It would great to see the writers build on their very charming dynamic instead of trying to create unnecessary angst.

LOL Matching Cinderella would hardly be difficult. I'd say this movie already has more going for it than any other Disney live action remake, save Mulan. Don't really care if Elvis would have asked more from him, I have no desire to see the movie or him in it. Debuting in a Nolan film is nice but doesn't mean he can't do different things. It would be refreshing to see that he is not some wannabe snob who thinks he's too good for Disney because he had a role in a Nolan film.

If Richard Madden can go from a big role in GoT to playing the love interest in Cinderella and now getting leading parts in tv shows and movies (and winning a GG in the process), I think Harry will be fine. Being in a blockbuster will give him more exposure and if he is really serious about acting and makes smart choices, he can land more serious roles later on. Elvis was obviously not the role for him (thank goodness.)

Please. Is Cersei not the perfect example of a female character with serious character flaws? The problem with Dany isn't that people hated that she had flaws but that her descent into madness was too quick and didn't make sense. Heck, I grew to dislike Dany exactly because I thought she was too arrogant, entitled and power hungry. Those are certainly character flaws in my book. If some of you aren't noticing flawed female characters, then perhaps you're arent paying close enough attention or watching enough tv shows or movies that center women characters.
