  1. I have no dispute about this. Obviously these films are valuable to their audience. I also really enjoyed watching Little Women in theaters. But I don't think people should be derided for not valuing the same types of films.
  2. Well, there is a place for movies like Venom as well, and just because it's not cathartic doesn't mean people don't get more than a passing grill out of it (for example, people can get attached to the Eddie/Venom dynamic). Anyway that hardly shows that people who like genre stuff only want cheap thrills.
  3. It's not disfavoring the genre that I took issue with, it is assuming that nobody else could get anything but cheap thrills from said genre.
  4. I mean, I would argue that the people who are doing Ant-Man fancams get more out of the movies they like than "mildly amusing attractions." This seems a little condescending towards people who just have a different taste from you. Plus I think the rise of prestige TV can't be ignored when it comes to the decline of "art" films (setting aside by many issues with that particular term).
  5. Well, this is the key point here, right? It's quite possible for a wide variety of genres to do well on streaming. The BO is where many genres are struggling, and I don't think that can be changed by a marketing magic bullet. Put another way, it's not that people only want to watch blockbuster action movies, it's that they view other films as still being just as good when watched on streaming. I don't personally share this view, I like a lot of movies more with the theater experience (I saw Power of the Dog recently in theaters and was quite glad I did) but it's how a lot of people view this.
  6. I think there's a big enough fanbase for this universe for the movies to have a certain floor. This will drop but won't be the disaster some here are predicting.
  7. How do you think studios should sell them? It's not like studios are trying to lose money on these. I think audience behavior shifts (much of it related to streaming) are a much more likely explanation for the shifts in the composition of BO that we've seen than just "bad marketing."
  8. My Power of the Dog screening a couple of weeks ago was practically sold out.
  9. Not necessarily what I expect, but it occurs to me that I might want to enter a less crowded space. Username Menor DOM rank 11 DOM gross $590,000,000 Will input the second part later.
  10. I think we exhausted this point already in the other contest's thread. At this point it's only a week away so no point in getting heated over this.
  11. I don't really care about the Oscars but there is no "pretend" here. There is no condition that a movie that is focus grouped or market researched can't be art. This definition of art is something I take issue with, it prioritizes process over result. If I like the result better, I don't care what process is used to make it. Especially this idea that "weight" is something that always needs to be prioritized in an action scene. It depends on the point of the action. The purpose of action scenes isn't always to be "brutal" or "realistic." Point me to what definition of art says it can't have CGI. Also, what's wrong with silent films? Why can't they be art? Are you saying that all silent films from back in that time aren't art? Again, this seems like a completely arbitrary standard. If you ask me, any movie is art. It's better to use terms like good or bad art than this weird gatekeeping.
  12. I actually didn't consider this factor. Yeah, it probably won't hold that great. This kind of movie isn't what people are in the mood for.
  13. True. Was looking at the Endgame comp, but seems like Endgame just had a very good late surge.
  14. Just because people don't criticize the Chinese government on this forum doesn't mean they don't criticize it elsewhere. This is a box office forum so the discussion will be about how things affect the box office.
  15. Yesterday was a real uptick, probably caused by the release of those marketing clips. We saw jumps in Denver, Megaplex, Drafthouse, and Sacramento. Actually looks like Tuesday is when TROS stalled out.
  16. So you quoted my post, but didn't read it... Why not? No country or law should be immune from criticism, no matter who provides it.
  17. People complain on a box office forum about it, because that's when it affects the topic of the forum. I have complained many times about other things the CCP has done, but not on this forum, because it wasn't relevant.
  18. Well not really. Let's say that a really big movie is able to kickstart some regions that have been performing poorly this year. Then it will overperform that comp. I don't know if this will actually happen but wouldn't be surprised.
  19. Well, I can think of reasons. But to be safe better to use those.
