It needs at least 101m in pre-sales to be an event.
Btw, if these pre-sales are exploding to 75m+ numbers, where's all the official announcement and gloating about it like we got last year with TFA's 100m+ figure?
But in some cases they still realize quality is necessary for good ROI. The ones where quality doesn't come into play in the decision at all are the cash grabs.
I honestly don't get the fuss over the pre-sales though. They're sitting at like 14m right? Compare that to 100m for TFA and we see just how gargantuan the disparity in hype is between the two.
Assuming the cutoff for top 10 ends up around 250m, then that would be disappointing I'll agree. Hardly disastrous though (i.e. unprofitable). Missing the top 8 (<325m) wouldn't be disastrous in the slightest. Still be a huge 700m WW grosser.
If it does more than 30m I'll be willing to talk about 150+ for the weekend. Anything less than that is entirely expected for an SW film and gives us no good indicator of how preview frontloaded it will be.
Previews are going to be annoying. No franchise does midnights/previews like Star Wars, and of course this will be no exception. A massive preview number isn't going to tell us jack squat about the rest of the weekend.
Ok, I unabashedly loved that trailer. If it can be that fun and zany throughout then this will easily be Illumination's best to date. Also the lack of Minions in the trailer was a much needed breath of fresh air for the franchise.
I need to see this considering I've been waiting ever since being blown away by Steinfeld in True Grit for her to deliver another amazing performance and it sounds like she does. Hope she sticks to this path instead of the strange Selena Gomez wannabe pop star route she also seems to be going for.
