  1. The people who liked it really liked it, and that's enough for noms? More generally perhaps Academy voters of a certain age appreciated the movie's reverence for 70s cinema.
  2. This has become the box office equivalent of a band being 'big in Japan'.
  3. Watching this trailer I had an image of Gob from Arrested Development. "Imagine this superhero who, let me finish... is also a vampire!" Anyway, looks pretty boring. I admit I've never heard of this character - is he a fan favourite or is Sony just clutching at whatever straws it has left? ETA - if nothing else no-one can say Leto's miscast. Fucker really doesn't age and it's starting to get quite weird.
  4. It certainly seems a long time ago now that a few on here predicted some Return Of the King style nominations for Endgame.
  5. Joker getting a screenplay nod definitely has the feel of "well we nominated it for everything else so why the hell not?"
  6. Yeah, he did occur to me but a lot of people (rightly or wrongly) would say Spanish = Caucasian. Not that I think any of this actually matters, but then... I am white.
  7. Erivo's single nomination may have just about staved off another #OscarsSoWhite backlash, but we'll see.
  8. I was about to joke that Phillips is now a best director nominee and Christopher Nolan isn't, but of course Nolan did get nominated for Dunkirk.
  9. I heard next to nothing about Johansson's performance in Jojo Rabbit. Was it really that good?
  10. Must admit I haven't. But if he isn't the lead then they sure had fun plastering his name all over it.
  11. I actually wouldn't mind, but it'll definitely cause an upset. I'd certainly take her over Ed bloody Sheeran.
  12. Lol. If this is confirmed a lot of people will have... opinions.
  13. The first movie was absolutely lower-tier MCU. Now would be a very good time to balls to the wall a la Ragnarok, so I hope this guy wasn't fired for wanting to do that.
  14. I was watching batman returns for the first time in a decade the other day and I was struck by just how much storytelling legwork Elfman's score does by having every single musical flourish line up with the actions onscreen. Obviously not every movie is going to be as operatic as burton's but man, some tight cues make so much difference.
  15. I've less than zero interest in Top Gun (aerial dogfights are anathema to me) but I think it'll do pretty well. The trailer was effective.
  16. To be fair it's got an imaginative director. If he wants to have some fun, which is how I'm interpreting this, no other MCU project would be preferable...
  17. I'm neutral on Gervais - there is something faintly grotesque about Hollywood award ceremonies, but he's still taking the money. To be honest anyone who can stomach watching these entire shows in one sitting is a braver soul than me.
