I love the comics but I didn't really make friends with this adaption. What's wrong here is that it's trying too hard to get the look right, to the point where it looks not like a movie but like a slideshow made up from album frames. Movies, especially action movies, are about movement (cinematography from greek kinesis = movement), and where the comic has a superb action frame, the movie adaption needs a corresponding superb action scene, not some stills. Where the comic has iconic shots of Nancy enchanting the crowd, the movie would need a superb strip dancer, not pretty but wooden Jessica Alba.

Apart from those misunderstandings, it's ok - the cast is mostly excellent (I really like Elijah Wood in creepy roles), the production design fits and the colours and editing are good.

****1/4 out of *****

It's definitely uneven in terms of acting, with almost all the guys giving solid performances and almost every female character ranging from mediocre to cringe-worthy, with Brittney Murphy(RIP) being the slight exception.

However, unlike Eli Roth's Torture porn crap, this film turns sadism into true art.
