Indian Box Office Thread | Jawan overtakes Pathaan, becomes highest grossing Indian movie of 2023

Recommended Posts

F9 and Shang Chi releasing this week. Ideally F9 would have easily won the match but its been out on Digital for weeks now, and Conjuring 3 which had similar case didn't do anything, so this is gonna be interesting.

As for market, MH, Kerala and Assam are still closed. The last one don't really matter but the first 2 make as much as 30-45% of Hollywood movie box office.

It's been a while since we have low tier MCU movie open in India. The last one was Ant Man and The Wasp & before that was Black Panther which had small opening due to small release but legged to a big total.

MCU small/medium solo movies openers in India

Ant Man 2 - ₹6.93cr
Black Panther - ₹6.74cr

Doctor Strange - ₹3.63cr

In normalcy, I would have expected Shang Chi to have proper marketing (now it just feels lost), and open probably around ₹6cr ish. But now with weak buzz & MH and Kerala closed, target will be ₹3.5-4cr Approx. Let's see.

Looks to be interesting weekend ahead. If F9 beats SC despite the piracy - that will be a statement.

When situation was a lot better, GvK couldn't get opening in North India, so not sure if SC or F9 can.

South India opening of GvK was equivalent of ₹20cr while North was barely ₹4cr equivalent.

Fast and Furious is very big brand in India. No statement if beats or not SC OW. :stretcher:

Big brand with HD copies everywhere..

everyone knows it has been released elsewhere months ago.

Big brand? You have to look at context, imagine Fast and Furious 8 was never released in India, and we release Fast and Furious 8 today after few years of delay with HD pirated copies all over the internet, how much will it earn?

Please - context is important. Fast9 is a delayed released with HD copies everywhere; if it does better than Shang Chi something is wrong.

I think its safe to write off movie in urban centres but in small centres there might be lack of awareness of release online. These centres is where F9 can do well. Mindless action flick is what these centres feed on and F9 is perfect for that.

GvK did great in these small centres, one reason of it not doing well in big cities of North is because of piracy while in smaller centres it did ok.

What makes even tough to judge is that these small centres are walkup audience with zero pre-sales, so it will be only on day of release we will know how it did. The Conjuring 3 is supposed to be play well in similar places, but it didn't. Reason could be that it hardly had any awareness of being released, F9 isn't much better.

In normalcy F9 should have destroyed Shang-Chi. So if it wins despite piracy I don't think it would be incredibly surprising.

I mean yeah but last two Fast movies didn't open like that BIG either. Hobbs and Shaw opened ₹13.4cr, while Captain Marvel did ₹15.5cr. Ofc CM had Pre-EG hype but 10 days before release expectations from CM were around ₹8-9cr only IIRC.

In normalcy, in direct clash SC would have competed well with F9 IMO. It would have lost most likely but would have been really close. In big cities SC would have won I guess.

Yeah but CM's opening was too big for SC to match. I doubt it would even get close. F9 could have matched Hobbs and Shaw. So F9 would be well ahead.
