Indian Box Office Thread | Jawan overtakes Pathaan, becomes highest grossing Indian movie of 2023

Wrote a piece on that

Welcome To New York, Pari and Dil Junglee are name of three films released in last three weeks. What’s common in these three, other than the that these were box office flops is that Pooja Entertainment Private Limited aka Pooja Films either produced or released them. So what’s big deal in that which called for a separate article, you must be thinking that. There is something special, to find read on.

Pooja Films is production and distribution company established by Vashu Bhagnani in 1995. Since then they have produced over 25 films and distributed couple of more. Company had a great start in late 90s, with five of the six films produced by the company till 2001 turning out Super Hits, including Coolie No.1, Hero No.1, Biwi No.1, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan and Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai.

Right there, seventeen years back, debut film of Tusshar Kapoor Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai was released, which emerged Super Hit, and last hit for the company. Ever since company has produced 22 films and all of them failed to emerge Hit. Yes, 22 in last seventeen years and none of them was Hit, the one that come close being a successful film was F.A.L.T.U. in 2011, nothing other than that. It is difficult to find some studio with 100% success ratio with more than 20 films, but it’s perhaps impossible to find someone (of course except Pooja Films) with ‘ZERO’ Hit film from 20 plus odd films, because usually the person/company will stop making films before that.

Following are the Bollywood films produced by Pooja Entertainment Private Limited in last seventeen years (in reverse chronological order)

  1. Dil Juunglee (2018)

  2. Welcome To New York (2018)

  3. Mona Darling (2017)

  4. Sarbjit (2016)

  5. Welcome 2 Karachi (2015)

  6. Humshakals (2014)

  7. Youngistaan (2014)

  8. Himmatwala (2013)

  9. Rangrezz (2013)

  10. Ajab Gazabb Love (2012)

  11. F.A.L.T.U. (2011)

  12. Do Knot Disturb (2009)

  13. Kal Kissne Dekha Hai (2009)

  14. Sorry Bhai (2008)

  15. Shaadi No.1 (2005)

  16. Silsilay (2005)

  17. Vaada (2005)

  18. Out Of Control (2003)

  19. Jeena Sirf Mere Liye (2002)

  20. Om Jai Jagdish (2002)

  21. Deewanapan (2001)

  22. Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein (2001)

Unless they have really deep pockets like Laika with Nike, I gather that shows if a studio keeps budgets in hand even if it's a flop in theatrical a studio can still make a profit with ancillary and keep producing films.

Out of all of these, the only ones which looked like possible hits based on marketing and promos were RHTDM, FALTU and Himmatwala. Everything else looked like a disaster from the trailer and posters alone. Himmatwala started Sajid Khan's downward spiral, RHTDM could not recapture the spirit which made Minnale such a huge hit (the second half of RHTDM needed serious reworking). FALTU was the only one which looked fun and kind of delivered on that, except for the typical Remo ending.

Bhagnani deserves to go to prison for unleashing Humshakals on unsuspecting audiences though.

Flop Wars isn't even in contention.

FF is yet to see a disaster of the magnitude of solo a star wars story.

I won't waste my time with someone who wait for and rave Car Wars. Might as well debate with a Sallu fan.

That's easy quit for someone who've run out of options.

Yeah, go on, debate wirh Sallu fan, both FW and Sallu have in common, both have delivered flops this Christmas.
