bed005
So it never had much of a chance. I didn't watch it at all, so I don't really care. I just thought it seemed sudden.
mulder42
The comedy that started at the beginning of the season on CBS; the name escapes me--it got cancelled after 2 airings. I knew #FWBL wasn't long for this world. Edited October 1, 2014 by mulder42
Incarnadine
Dracula (NBC) cancelled Bad Teacher, Friends With Better Lives, Hostages, Intelligence, & The Crazy Ones (CBS) cancelled Well damn. This was a really bad year for new sitcoms, but I was actually starting to like FWBL. Networks seem to be getting faster and faster on cancellations, if a show isn't an instant hit it's gone before it even has a chance to grow. If Cheers came out now it would be axed after 3 episodes (If I recall, the pilot opened dead last in its time slot).
Community Manager Water Bottle Posted May 15, 2014 Author Community Manager Share Posted May 15, 2014 Well damn. Counterpoint: Mom isn't doing that well in the ratings but CBS is trying hard to make it a hit. Counterpoint: The Mindy Project (and even Brooklyn Nine Nine) struggles hard in getting viewers and yet FOX is trying to save it. Counterpoint: The Goldbergs ratings were solid but not that hot and yet ABC decided to reward it for barely holding down a night by moving it to Wednesday nights As for Cheers, it opened in a completely different era where it had room to grow. There were only three networks to choose from, no cable, no internet. Meaning there was a much better chance people would find it and tune in. Even then, of the season Cheers started these comedies didn't make it past it's first season: Gloria (despite being in the top 20) Square Pegs Ace Crawford, American Eye Gun Shy Condo Star of the Family Amanda's It Takes Two Baby Makes Five At Ease The New Odd Couple Of all the new comedies, only five new comedies were renewed out of seventeen. Two more would be cancelled by their networks by the end of their second season (one would later be syndicated). The only four remaining: Newhart, Cheers, Silver Spoons, Family Ties. That's a 29.41% survival rate. This season I believe there were 20 new comedies. Only five were renewed. That's a 24% survival rate but as you noted, it was a terrible season for new sit-coms. Of those five, three were "hits" (The Goldbergs/About a Boy/The Millers) and two were critical darlings/network favorite (Mom/Brooklyn Nine-Nine). I would add that with the new competition coming in from cable and internet and more networks, the networks are being shockingly conservative when it comes to cancelling shows. A 5% drop in survival rate is deep but...considering the circumstances, the difference could be a lot higher. If anything, the only reason Cheers wouldn't have survived this season is because NBC is basically clearing it's comedy slate again. If it premiered on FOX, CBS, or ABC it would have probably made it.
Talkie
Dracula (NBC) cancelled Bad Teacher, Friends With Better Lives, Hostages, Intelligence, & The Crazy Ones (CBS) cancelled The Crazy Ones had promise but the writing was weak and uneven. Better writers, a stronger focus and a better love interest for SMG's character might have saved it. Granted I only watched a couple of episodes but it seemed like it could have held its audience with some changes on the creative team. Oh, well. "The Last Ship has become this summer's top drama among key adult demos with its epic scale and visceral storytelling. Major Crimes continues to be one of the most enduring and popular crime-drama franchises on television.
