That is true, but Slumdog was a horrible "sweep" winner. Very average film that didn't deserve to win in so many categories, but the voters got caught up in exactly what you mentioned above: hype.

Slumdog was a fine movie that deserved to be nowhere near major Academy Awards. The hype overwhelmed everything else.

It was all about the "feel good" story in the middle of an economic collapse. Irrational decision to give it the kind of sweep it received.
